My owners manual says that my fuel needs to be 91 octane. Thats premium right?? Would it hurt anything if I just stuck with premium for now on? I searched throughout the forum and I really didnt get a straight answer.

I would stick with the premium.

If your manual says 91 octane, that's what you use, every time.

My dad's old PGO 50cc required premium. Pretty odd.

Interesting. In Oz 91 is regular, 95 is mid and 98 RON is premium. You can also get 89 and 91 E10 (10% ethanol) which is the cheapest.

What's the regular/premium RON in other countries?

UK bog standard is 95 RON, super or the next one is about 97, then there is the 'super turbo charged' fuel.

Some Tesco petrol stations do 99 octane as well. I tried It once but didn't make much difference if any.

Canada and US uses AKI
UK, NZ, Australia, etc. uses RON.

Regular gas in Canada, US, Australia, and New Zealand is 91-92 RON or 87 AKI
Regular gas in the UK is 95 RON or 90 AKI. 89-90 AKI is what we would consider mid grade in US/Canada.
Premium gas in Canada is typically 91 AKI or 96 RON
Premium gas in US is typically 92 AKI or 97 RON
Super premium where available in both countries is typically 94 AKI or 99-100 RON.

I am finding a few more stations w/o ethanol when I head further out to fill my tanks. One has the same price w/ or w/o. It's about a 3% mileage boost.

In BC, all Chevron 94 (AKI) and Shell 91 (AKI) is ethanol free. I go with Chevron 94 when I want to get gas for my lawnmower as it's on a separate hose. The consensus seems to be that the hose holds 2 litres or half a gallon of whatever the last guy filled up their vehicle with downstream of the pump. Some but not all Costcos around here state that their 91 (AKI) is ethanol free, but again one hose.

In WA State, I believe the only place to get ethanol free is at the marina stations.

Nice. Here it is for the farmers since some equipment can't use it w/ ethanol. Another seemingly good idea gone so wrong(ethanol).

I hate ethanol. But the fuel economy improvement of using non ethanol premium fuel does not offset the added cost of filling up with premium.

98RON all the way. It's barely $1 difference per tank anyway.

From above, it seems regular fuel in the UK/US meets Honda's recommendation, so why go higher - waste of time/money.

Does the manual say 91 AKI or 91 RON? I bet it is 91 RON which is regular and not premium. Many foreign brands list the fuel grade in RON since most of the world uses that. AKI is the better rating system BTW.

Using a higher octane of fuel than needed will not hurt your engine but it will cost more and give LESS performance. The higher the octane the slower the burn of the fuel. The slower the burn the less energy, and less energy means less power. The reason they make high octane fuel is to prevent detonation{pink/knock} in engines with high compression ratios or those that use turbo/superchargers{a few of them use regular BTW}. Go by what the manual says but make sure which fuel grading system the number is for.

There isn't one manual.
Different manuals exist for different markets.
This is why it is essential to use the fuel listed in the manual which was supplied with the scooter.
