Haibike, Specialized, Giant, Treck, all have torque sensing mid drive bikes. Legal class 1 and class 3 bikes. This will be the future of personal transportation when liquid fuel starts to get really expensive in 20 years and world population tops 9 billion.

As usual, no US availability, and no info on cost, but a 50 MPH electric scooter would be better than a 30 MPH 50 cc.
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

Good article. Seems Yamaha has taken them up their swap out battery system.

That said I thought Yamaha and Honda were working on electric scooter technology together already. It hasn't been widely advertised though . . .. And for that matter all the big four are getting in on the action now too. A recent article . . ..

Will be interesting to see how the electric scooter/motorcycle market fairs out in the future. So far it seems they sell better in urban environments due to the range issues. Speed has not been the issue with electric power. But if you want more speed you sacrifice range. And so it goes . . . and so it is written. ;)

The whole dynamic and discussion of charging and range anxiety changes when this technology becomes available - no need to have chargers all over the place, etc

It reminds me of a C3 a little bit.

The fact that it could obtain 60 MPH and a 60 mile range is awesome for metropolitan areas or around town errands.

Some day in the future I predict that there will have to be some kind of standardization for rechargeable batteries that are used in motorcycles, scooters, and ATVs plus another range for automobiles, trucks, and SUVs. The gas stations will become more like "ice houses" except instead of picking up a block of frozen water you will get a block of energy . . . just leave the mold behind for the next refill/next consumer so-to-speak. :geek:

Just been on the Zero web site again and discovered that Zero now have a dealer in Scotland.
I might have to go and try one out and that has the potential to end badly for my wallet.

Nope not been. Dealer is 130 miles away. I've been working and will not have a chance to go for a look for at least two weeks.

A colleauge at work now has a new Zero bike - cost about £14-15000! Lovely bike.
Sadly the 125cc equivalent licencing 11Kw costs £12,000 (far too expensive considering it must be much cheaper to manufacture as the engine is simpler compared to a normal one) and whatever the cost of batteries and the push to electric, this is ridiculous pricing.

It does seem difficult to understand even taking into account the price/volume conundrum.

The pricing is what it is.
The Zero is a high spec machine, the suspension is fully adjustable Showa and much of the manufacturing is done in the USA.
If all the manufacturing was done elsewhere, price would drop.
Some time ago I did a comparison on total cost of ownership between a Zero S and an NC750S DCT.
Despite the higher purchase price the Zero worked out cheaper after a couple of years or so.

Nothing gets past you - except the point being made was that the parts that are different, that they are less off them and would seem to be much cheaper to make.

The bits that cost the money are mostly made in an expensive labour market.
And the batteries, petrol bikes don't have expensive batteries.
£9100 doesn't buy many bikes with fully adjustable Showa suspension front and rear and more torque that a very torquey thing.
883 Sportster, its £9100 or thereabouts, but crap suspension and rides like a bucket of shit.
I'd take a Zero every day of the week.

All my life I figured a Harley bagger would be my last bike . . . or at least something like a "Wide Glide" in case I didn't want all the bulk.

But as I grow older "less is more".

Long story short I would take a Zero over an 883 Sportster as well.

That said I think I've bought my last motorcycle anyways. It's like having a loyal dog that you would just never want to part with. And it makes everyone happy to be around it and reflect on when it was in it's prime.

Harley dealer talks about a Harley competitor...?
Hmmm first few minutes were enough for me.
I already know I will never buy a Harley Livewire, the current choice is between a Zero and an RE 650 Interceptor.
