How long can I wait?

Post by Munions »

I like to change my engine oil in my PCX once a year and I just passed the 1 year mark for the oil that's currently in it. I've only put just over 1,000 miles on it since the last oil change.

I've always used Motul's 10w30 4T full synthetic scooter oil but it's been out of stock on all of the sites I buy from for at least 6 months! They always have the 10w40, but never the 10w30 anymore.

I saw that there's Honda HP4S oil is in stock (https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda ... M?ref=null) but it doesn't match the MB rating of the scooter oil. There's also HP4M (https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda ... 1?ref=null) but it's not fully synthetic.
Would I be fine using either of these? I like to follow the manual as closely as I can to ensure this scoot lasts as long as it can.

I'm also going to reach out to RevZilla when they're open to see if they can provide an ETA on the Motul oil coming back in stock. I'm wondering if I can get away with waiting another month or two before changing it if it means I can get the oil I always get?

The general consensus of the motor vehicle industry is that they want you changing your oil every year, if it’s a low mileage. Condensation and other particulates get in the oil and need to be changed out. As for what do use, any general 10 W 30 or 10 W 40 oil will work fine. No need to get caught up in specifics, if you’re changing once a year. I use mobil 1 10W-30 synthetic.

It doesn't matter too much but I would be a bit cautious putting 40W oil into my bike if I lived in an exceptionally cold climate.
So to answer your question don't sweat it if you live somewhere warm, but if you in the arctic circle be wary!
