Rear brake shoe life / effectiveness. 2015 PCX150.

Post by pxc-in-japan »

Hello, all. I am curious about the rear brake life / a perceived reduction in effectiveness.
I am not asking for technical help, I am just wondering what your expectations are for the 2015 PCX150 brake shoe life expectancy and effectiveness.

Set 1 (from new). 0 - 35,000 kilo's (21,700 miles on these brakes).
Set 2. 35,000 to 65,000 kilo's (18,600 miles on these brakes).
Temporarily back to set 1 as set 2 seemed so poor. So another 4,000 miles on set 1 and now the bike is at 71,000 kilo's or 44,000 miles.
110 kilo / 70 mile round trip commute daily and half of that is on a 60KPH / 40MPH road with very little braking.

Still have both sets and a new set.
There is, visually at least, almost no difference in the amount of brake shoe material on either of the used sets or the new set.
I moaned about it to the dealer mechanic the next time I went to get parts, saying the manufacturer must have applied too little break shoe material to the parts.
Honda parts are not what they used to be, he laughed.

So, once there is no more adjustment possible (the external nut and thread adjuster), there is no choice but to replace the parts with new ones, but why is it that they seem to have no difference in wear? Likely there is a difference, but it is not clear without, say, a magnifying glass.

I take apart, clean and re-fit the rear brakes every 10,000 kilo's (6,200 miles) basically to inspect them for any potential problems... It's a 30 minute job after all. So I don't believe there is any damage or other undue wear elsewhere in the braking system.
In case it helps... I replace the front brake pads every 20,000 kilo's or 14,00o miles) when they have about 2mm left on them, and I replace the fluid every 10,000 kilo's as I have always found the PCX brakes to be "OK" at best, though I inspect them frequently and there appears to be no damage or undue wear on the front braking system either.

I think it's a great commute-scoot, otherwise... apart from the clutch bearings I have to replace about every 15-20 thousand kilo's / 10-15 thousand miles.
KF18-1004### model.

Glad to hear what thoughts you may have on this.

Have 71,000 mi on my [original] rear brake shoes. Replaced the front pads at about 39,000 mi. Having said that, I'm not hard on brakes, [other
than for panic stops]

@mymitzi
That seems like very high mileage indeed for such a job to be done for the first time.
My first front break pads needed replacing - they were literally down to the steel - at 25,000 kilometres (15,500 miles), and I do not break hard either, but just cruise to work and back a few days/week at about 110 kilos / 70 miles a day.
Have done them at 20 - 25,000 kilos since.

Keep in mind, my riding is mostly for pleasure on lightly traveled country roads. Usually coast allot...... anticipating stops.
