Scooter 1000

Post by dankly1 »

Hello fellow PCXers.

I had a very interesting ride this weekend on my 2019 PCX 150. I have recently discovered the joys of long distance 2-wheeled travel and decided to do an Iron Butt Association Scooter 1000 Gold. To meet the requirements for this ride I had to complete 1000 miles in less than 24 hrs on a scooter with less than 300cc. I did it in 23 hrs and 8 minutes on this route:

These are a few observations from my journey:

-The PCX is very stable all the way up to the governed speed of 68 mph.
-Mine will easily do many many hours at wide open throttle without complaint.
- Even though I routinely get 105+ mpg while driving around town, spending many many hours at WOT gave me 68-70 mpg.
-Range is pretty limited at 68-70 mpg. I pulled into Burns and Bend, OR with the low fuel light flashing and had to dump my 1 gallon Rotopax into the tank to make it from Hood River, OR to Kennewick, WA.
-The location of the fuel fill isn't very convenient with my Tucano Urbano leg cover installed.
-Having something big and soft - like a sleeping bag - strapped onto the pillion seat makes a nice backrest and allows some unique riding positions to cut down on aches and pains.
-After about 15 hours, my butt stopped hurting.
-The metal grate on the bridge over the Columbia River at Hood River is SUPER sketchy. Very narrow and lots of truck traffic. It was the scariest part of the whole trip.
-She definitely doesn't feel like she's putting out 13 hp going over 5000 ft passes.

And the biggest lesson: Long distance trips on a PCX are possible, economical and actually quite fun. Here is a picture from when I pulled up to the house after over 23 hours away. I'm smiling under the balaclava!

Yes, I'm planning on doing the SCBR in 2023. A lot can happen between now and then, but I think it would be a great time!

Geeez, that is quite a ride and accomplishment, and a nice report and map, Alex: thank you. I'm more in the maybe-100 miles-in-24-hours class. It is especially gratifying to hear of a ride through your beautiful state when many of us have been hearing and seeing more reports of vast, sad fires of beautiful Oregon forests for too many days. I was in Bend briefly just about a half-century ago, but I mostly only know the Pacific Highway cities and lands, and then only in cars and bicycles. Thanks and congrats again, and keep pushing and enjoying your also-impressive PCX.

I made a back rest for my bike as well, but I also added a gel seat pad for my butt. From that point on my rides were really comfortable. You should try one of those. You would be surprised at how much of a difference it makes. My riding days are just about over because I am getting up there in age, but I would still not hesitate to take my 2013 PCX on a long ride if I wanted to. (Also note the strap behind my back rest. There is a notch there that fits a 1 gallon gas container.)

Thats an incredible feat. Congrats. I wanna try something like this some day.

Was this done non-stop? Or did you camp out on the side of the road for a while?

Thanks ConeLite,
I didn't stop and sleep, just brief stops for fuel and a bite to eat. I didn't want to take time to order food so I took everything in a little soft cooler in my top box.
