Cleaning your bike Helmet

Just a reminder that the Christmas break is a good time to refresh your bike helmet.

I remove the visor and any removable padding, open the vents and drop in a filled bath. Wash the inside with a very small amount if shampoo.

Sort the outside and visor with wet paper towels and let it all dry naturally.

Open any vents so dead insects fall out o_O

I just wipe the outside and clean the visor. The padding in my cheap helmets is not removable but still looks fine. In winter I wear a balaclava which keeps the inside clean, in summer I just freshen up a bit and wipe my head before I set off, so keeps the inside cleaner than it may have been

I have two helmets - £40 4-5 star rated, one for summer and one a size larger to allow for the balaclava. The box is ok but even after adjustment, the visor 'notches' are still hard to navigate whilst the winter helmet has a visor that is easy to open any amount you want.

Good idea!

I think the last time I cleaned helmets I used J&J Baby Shampoo or something like that. :geek:

How about if I just drop my helmet into a swimming pool, then go for a ride with it so the wind can dry it? :D

Lousy weather, (it's snowing again today) so good time to remove the pads from my helmet and give them a soaking, a squish and a couple rinses.
First 3 washes returned dirty water in the basin!....

ahh - this is the first time these have been washed. Do not recall how many years I've had this Nolan N104-EVO modular helmet. (less than 8, more than 5?) Riding at daybreak, or before, means I've not sweated in it much. Can count on both hands the number of times I've ridden wearing a mesh jacket.....

Might find a youtube on procedure for removing the pads if you've misplaced the booklet.

Any ride in the Florida sun longer than 15 min and I use a skull cap, helmet stays fresh much longer:
