Belt Case Corrosion !

Post by GrahamH »

As I was cleaning my bike (2017 Forza 300) I pulled off the black plastic belt case cover and was shocked to find severe corrosion of the aluminium case. There were strips of foam stuck to the inside of the plastic cover and these were soaking up and retaining water and probably salt etc from the road.
Surely Honda did not add these bits of porous foam? The bike has had a previous owner but has only covered 1500 miles in 3 years, did he add the foam? Have you similar foam and corrosion on your machine? Worth a check maybe.

The foam was very well stuck but has been removed and the aluminium case cleaned up and protected from further corrosion so no lasting harm done.

The foam is meant to be there, it prevents rattling.
If you take the corrosion off it will corrode again.
Best to leave it as is and put the cover back on.

Have it sandblasted clean at a body shop, primed and repainted with baked on enamel or powder coat it....prob solved

Why powder coat a component which is hidden behind a cover?
Doesn't make any sense at all.

My Forza was a lot worse than the photo - poor design which scoops rain water from the front of the cover and traps it behind the plastic cover. Not worth painting the alloy belt cover it as it is behind the plastic outer cover. Just rub the corrosion off and replace the plastic cover.

You guys do whatever you want with your own bikes, I don’t care whether it’s behind a cover or not, I want the corrosion gone… This reminds me of a rotten wood wall painted with a fresh coat of paint; not on my vehicles.

Clean it and spray with some high temp paint - probably be better that way.

I would really appreciate better guards to stop all the road crub from being thrown onto the engine on my PCX - larger, wider style - wonder if anyone sells such things.

I think my cover had foam rubber on it. I tried to remove it unsuccessfully. Nasty stuff.

It's a design flaw as the plastic cover scoops rain water at the front which gets trapped behind the plastic cover.

Is it possible to drill a small hole in the plastic cover to let the water out?

No need, the cover isn't sealed, there's a gap all the way round.

Iv'e started stripping the rear end of my Forza. I have previously removed corrosion and used ACF 50, it's just as rotten now.
I am going to wire wheel it and Waxoyl the casing
