Mileage expectations on Honda Forza 300

Post by Whitestix »

I bought this 2014 machine last year with only 80 miles actual miles on it. I have had two Honda Reflex scooters and I think I got between 60 and 70 mpg with them. However, with the Forza, the best I have gotten, now with 1500 miles on it, is about 55 mpg. I have a big Givi top case on the back and the taller windshield, but thought I'd be able to squeeze a bit more distance out of a gallon of gas.

I am thinking about replacing the Honda oil with synthetic oil, but beyond that, I am wondering if my fuel economy expectations are awry. Any thoughts? Oh, I am 6' tall and weight 170 lbs and drive 95% on urban streets.

Mine has been consistently in the 80's [mpg] My riding style is pretty conservative.......back roads 30-45 mph, mostly.
Your tire pressures normal? Brakes dragging? Some owners had issues with the back brake. Since you got decent mileage
with your previous rides......probably not your riding style. Lots of stop & go could be part of it...though??

I have a 2014 Honda Forza 300 with 143,000 km (89,000 miles) on it.

My mpg varies a lot according to where I ride it. Lots of highway 60 mph and I will get 75 mpg. Lots of slow speed stuff and I have gotten 102 mpg. These numbers are all calculated after a full fill up. Not from the onboard meter.

I average about 80 mpg. These numbers are all miles per imperial gallon, NOT USA MPG. The imperial gallon 4.5 litres vs the USA gallon of 4 litres.

I have the Honda Tall screen and a 55 liter huge top box. I weigh about 200 pounds ready to ride.

At 1500 miles your Forza 300 is not properly broken in. The kind of oil you use makes almost no difference.

The air speed of the bike matters more. Tailwinds great mpg, headwinds lousy mpg. Low speed, great mpg, interstate speed, lousy mpg. Up hill/down hill makes almost no difference. Premium gas/regular gas makes almost no difference.

My Forza 300 came with no grease on the brake pins and the brakes wore out really fast. The first set of front pads lasted 14,000 km (8500 miles), greased pin and the second set lasted 100,000 km (62,000 miles). Same with the rears. 50 cents worth of grease, damn you Honda.

Thanks for the excellent responses. I will temper my fuel economy expectations for a while and will get my mechanic to look at the brakes to see if there is a problem there, as you suggest. Cheers, Whitestix in Sacramento

2015 NSS300 I’m averaging 68-72 that’s 35-60 back roads. That’s also via computer read. US gallons. Wind make a huge difference as does ambient temp.

With my 2020 Forza 300 I have the following figures, riding on freeway / interstate, main and back roads:

Total distance I rode since June 2020: 1970,2 km [1224,2 mile]
Total used gas: 70.4 liter [18.6 gal US / 15.5 gal UK]
Average gas usage: 28.1 km/l [65.8 mile/gal US / 79 mile/gal UK]
Temperature range in this time span: 8 - 38°C [46 - 100°F]

I'm very pleased with these numbers ;) , because I'm not one to hold back on the throttle

Have you checked that the wheels rotate freely and the tyre pressures are spot on?

My 15 plate with 27k on regularly gets in the eighties mpg and that often with good percentage of motorway thrown in. I'm 105kg and i have a top box full of tools etc plus stuff under the seat so I'm probably at 130/40kg all up, plus i have the taller windshield. I do pay attention to the tyre pressures and have a tyre pressure indicator mounted. My bike has had oil/filter every 4k and new belt and air filter at 18k and starts first time.

2020 forza 300 with 1300 miles average 86mpg (UK), mix of motorway, a-roads and gridlocked rush hr commuting traffic in central London so overall, excellent economy considering.

Question, Does the British Honda Forza give its mpg in imperial gallons or is it USA gallons? Don't assume, show me proof.

The Canadian Forza reports its mpg in American gallons. Proof to follow soon.

I always assumed Imperial gallons. This is what usually happens to me. It shows somewhere in the eighties when I'm driving around. I do about 160 miles and then fill up so, get about 8 to 8.5 litres in so anywhere from 80 to 90 mpg. the mileometer reads Imperial because i compare that with measured distances frequently. So i would confidently say Imperial

I went for a slow ride yesterday in the cold.

My gauge was showing 30 km per liter which is pretty good for my old 145,000 km 2014 Honda Forza 300.

I pulled over and tried to change it to mpg but in my fiddling around I reset everything.

I did a quick circle of the parking lot to get some numbers.

It was showing 23.1 km per liter and then I pressed the right combo of buttons to show 54.7 mpg.

Now was this Imperial or USA gallons.

23.1 x 3.79 x 100/160 = 54.7

23.1 was on the gauge, 3.79 liters is one USA gallon, 100 miles is 160 km

So my Canadian scooter shows American miles per gallon.

It would be interesting if someone in the UK could do the same experiment. Don't assume anything.

UK mk1 Forza does litres or imperial gallons.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong

As the math teachers say, show your work. I don't care what some person from Thailand says in a user manual.

I had a Geely 150cc scooter for a while. The manual was in Chinese English. It was hilarious. For an oil change you were told to "Spill your oil"

Fuel in UK is supplied in litres.
When calculation done to imp mpg it aleays matched the readout

I have my bike display set to MPL - makes so much more sense to me given we input in litres, to work out range and consumption - wish I had the MPL option in my car (well, switching to electric soon so will need to get used to a whole new measurement of efficiency).

I stayed with the oil specified by Honda for the Forza.
But then I tend not to question service manuals for this kind of thing.

I have never seen the Honda 10W30 Moly oil.

Where do you get yours?

At my Honda dealer. Noticed the other day I still have a few Qts left of the HP4M - though the Forza is long gone. (also a couple air and oil filters
Wonder if I can use it in my new mower - it has a Honda engine.
