CVT Carter destroyed

Hi guys,
Any idea what could have caused a disaster like this???

I'm waiting the new carter to arrive (11341-KWN-780 for PCX 125 2015) to open transmission and check CVT Variator and Clutch inside... let's hope for the best!

What's the backstory on it. Did it happen after a CVT service or did it just happen out of the blue. What noises did you notice before and during the occurrence. From the picture, it looks to me like the crank moved out a bit.

Well just a 2nd hand scooter I got early this year. I changed on my own engine (10w 40) and transmission oil (75w 90) as front pads and air filter so far.

There is a clear noise coming from Cvt, most probably the half pulley if not a ball bearings too, but without opening is difficult to say.

Don't forget to check the clutch bearing. Many of them have that problem.

It certainly looks like that particular bike was abused. Did they ride it through water a lot?

from the scorch / burn marks it looks like the cvt belt is rubbing on the onside of the casting

Looks to me like incorrect parts have been used causing the fan blades to be in contact with the casing.

Considering the color of the old Oil and how consumed were the Brake Pads, I really think they barely serviced this bike, but now it's too late..
I also flushed radiator fluid and changed tyres, but now clearly my main concern is the CVT and Brake Shoes in the back, later will check valves clearance too.

Is it possible water has been sucked in CVT (In Ireland rains 300 days per year) or as Yorkie150 suggest, is really the Belt burning the Carter from the inside!?

on your first image it looks like the fan blades have been catching against the casing ....Has the bearing failed? Can you hold the big nut and move the fan and shaft sideways ? does it wobble about ?

Yep, I've noticed the same detail, so or the central nut has not been properly screwed or they used wrong parts as Gn2 advise, but for the burn signs it seems to make really a lot of friction like metal with metal... I will let you know soon guys, thanks for your help

Central nut, washer, or when the variator was re-fitted, they did not have enough flex in the belt so the variator does not sit far enough in when tightend - it's a real pain to do this sometimes and to do it properly, the clutch needs compressing and held when the belt it re-fitted, then tywrapped to allow the clutch to not expand and the belt to ride to the outer edge, which then means there is not enough slack to get the variator sat properly.

Not the best description, but anyone having removed the variato/clutch knows what I am talking about

With less than £100 of new parts, assuming no internal engine damage, that can easily be resolved.

I see what you mean Iceman, saw many video on Youtube on how to proceed, but I don't have the tools to proceed on my own at the moment.

I just got the original Honda Carter at a decent price, for sure the Pulley & belt should be changed, as the Rollers, Clutch weight possibly, if not the ball bearings too.

I think it’s a translation error —— it’s known as a CVT casing or cover

Remove the cover, since you've already removed all the bolts, and see if there's something wrong on the other side..

I wouldn't suggest buying a new cover and just instantly install it, better check what's going on inside that variator.

By that look of it, it haven't been opened for a long time. Maybe you need to change the entire drive (variator and clutch set).

CVT Casting arrived (55 euro shipped with gasket too), sorry but Carter is the name we commonly use in Italy.

I will inspect CVT in the weekend, clean and attempt to check what's wrong, I will keep you posted..

As advised cover removal has been tricky but at least I've been able to open, inspect and clean what it was possible without a CVT holder tool to remove Clutch and CVT. I used Break/Cluth cleaner and a microfiber cloth.

The picture is the final result of the cleaning process, and it was extremely dirt and neglected.

As you can see the half pulley has been touching the cover for looong time, so should be imediately changed, but I will need to figure out if the wrong pulley has been used or any other issue could be present. On the other hand the rotation of the cluth is quite noisy, probably shuld be changed the wieghts if not the bell too.

When I changed out my weights I failed to use a torque wrench. After a mile of riding that nut unscrewed itself and the variator ground itself through the casing like you have pictured.

That was my thought as well. From memory it looks like the crank nut is backed out too. Not enough thread showing on the crank?
