Small dogs have routines.

My pup and I have taken hundreds of walks in all weathers in the nearby Federal dam area since I retired.
Because the Federal roadways and lots are now barricaded - we have to walk in reverse of our normal directions due to barricaded bridges and roads.
That little dog will plant all four of her paws and refuse to walk in the 'wrong' direction on familiar paths. I had a half dozen 'refusals' - but in the end we managed the 1 hour walk.

After we got home, my daughter asked me "what is the matter with the our dog?!"
She didn't bite anyone, but she was angry at the world, stood on all 4 paws on my sleeping daughter, tore up her own bed, and stared at me for 2 hours - because she was made to go in the wrong direction on her familiar walking paths!

My old Forza parked above the dam Federal side of the reservoir....



BTW - the State park rangers, who monitor the other side of the reservoir, said it was OK to use those walking paths

Animals are a lot smarter than we give them credit for . . ..

It makes me think about those stories of dogs being lost and finding their way home, perhaps traveling hundreds of miles or more.

Sounds like your dog thinks she's the "Alpha". Sort of "my way or the highway".

Does she get upset if you don't walk her on time?

I let her know that I'm going for a walk, and she can come, too.
She's permitted all the goofing and sniffing she can do until her retractable leash comes to the end of its tether as I keep walking.
I don't do stop and sniff. We do 3.2 miles in our hour - which is close to the military cadence of 120 steps a minute.
But, usually, she trots ahead of me for the hour....then has a nice nap.

$478, well spent as a good exercise machine for my retirement....and is no more trouble than the other blondes in my life.
She gets to watch me drink an iced Heineken after the yard work.

Usually the pure breed dogs go for $1K plus . . .. Sounds like you got a deal.

Neighbors I had years ago, originally from England, had a Yorkshire Terrier they named "Crumpet".

Looked very similar to your dog.

I have a cat now but have always had dogs previously. They do have to be walked if you don't want your lawn modified.

My wife and I help with various small dog rescues, especially Jack Russell Terriers. Every one of our dogs was/is a rescue. Most of them have been pure bred JRTs, with many being breeders dumps. Like many breeders, once the dog can no longer have puppies the dog becomes a liability. There are other reasons for them being "dumped" as well, like divorces and unemployment. In any case, we try to find homes for them. Some are just too cute to send elsewhere, especially if we are down to only 1 or 2 dogs in our household. The most we ever keep for ourselves is 4, and that is very, very seldom. Our last group is slowly going to the big doggie playground in the sky now.

Here is a picture of our 4-some before two of them died (one in 2018 and one in 2019).

The only two left are the two hairy ones on the left. Both are older. One is 14 now. Dina (my avatar) will be 10 soon. They both keep us laughing. When we first saw Dina, we knew that she would fit in nicely. She had been returned to rescue twice because she was "too busy". Here is the first picture I took of her at the rescue organization. It was a hot July day. She was entertaining herself and staying cool at the same time. That bowl is one of the various bowls of water they had in the play area for the thirsty dogs.

...and Pepper?? Well she was extremely I'll when we drove across multiple states to get her. She wasn't expected to make it through the necessary surgeries, but she did. Now she and Dina are best pals.

If you let them, dogs can be therapy during this time. They keep us healthy by requiring walks. Even with a fenced yard, dogs love their time with their people when they go on walks. They also keep us company when we a not able to get out, and petting them is therapy in itself.

I can say the same for cats, except cats don't need walks and the are quite independent. They do show love and are grateful for you as well.

Still, there is, and has been for a very long time, a special bond between dogs and man. Each depends on the other for something that can't be quantified. Remember to thank them and protect them. Animals can get sick too.
