Out-freaking-standing...

I finished fixing the work area floor in the garage about 20 minutes ago. Didn't cost me a thing. There's this printing shop downtown that gets all sorts of things sent to them on these god-awful huge pallets, and I have a sort of deal with the owner, that if he'll give me the pallets, I'll haul them away and "dispose of them" Seems the city wants to charge him a fee for "hazardous material removal" because he's a business. Anyway, I have (or had) two large sheets of 3/4" (swear, it really is that thick) OSB that I've cut up and replaced the rotted 75-year-old floor on the raised shop area (It's only 4 feet wide, but it runs the length of my garage) and now all I have to do is replace the dry-rotted workbench top, and extend it on down, since it only goes halfway. I'd rather not post photos of my disgustingly dirty, cluttered, overstuffed garage, because it would be beyond embarrassing, (and my wife forbade it) but I will draw up a sketch in my drafting program, and post it to show what I repaired and replaced, and what I have to repair, replace, and add on.

And soon, Natasha will have a lair worthy of her.

It's all coming together.... (insert evil laugh here)

Well, I have to say that I didn't expect any interest, but since I have it, I'll be working on that drawing directly...

I think I'm now going to have to make up a sign, say, with a 1950s era pinup of some scantily clad buxom gal and the caption reading "Natasha's Lair"....

Natasha's Lair...

Post by Ishkabibble »

Okay, here goes.

This first drawing shows the "before" I started. Most of the floor of the raised deck was dry-rotted or otherwise damaged to the point that I wouldn't have stood a skinny five-year-old on it for fear of them falling through. Most of the bench top is in the same condition. So, here is the existing layout of the garage. It was built in the early 1920s for a Model T owned by the original owner of the house.

There are some extraneous shelves over the bench, and some stuff sort of hanging from the rafters, but I didn't draw any of that.

This second drawing shows what I've done, and what I'm going to be doing, so that I can have some space for working on projects, storing tools, etc.
Lair-2.png

Everything in red is flooring that I have replaced already or added. The bit to the left of the existing bench/deck is all brand new treated 2x6 and 3/4" OSB.

The part of the bench top that is blue is the next project, and I have to not only take all the old, damaged bench top off, but I have about 35 years worth of junk that has managed to collect there that I have to either dispense with, or find another location for. This includes an electric motor with a wire brush wheel on one side, and a grinding wheel on the other, and a vise that belonged to my grandfather that came from the railroad shops in Porterdale, Georgia when he worked there as a troubleshooter in the early 1930s. When I get the new benchtop on, I am going to put the grinder and vise back. I'm also going to be installing some new lighting, but that's another project for another day. Gotta get that new work area in a condition worth lighting up in the first place!

The green bench top is going to be all brand new construction. I have some treated 2x6 that I can use for the front face, and some treated 2x4 that will be the base framework.

I'd like to call everyone's attention to the purple bit underneath the corner. I had an old wooden packing box that almost perfectly fit underneath and between the legs of the workbench, so I cut some pieces of 3/8" slats from the pallets to make a new bottom for it, and turned it into a drawer. Two short pieces of 1X4 for the support rails attached to the legs of the bench, and voila! I now have a storage drawer. It worked so well, I might make a couple more in the future. I have boatloads of those pallet slats. Might as well put them to good use!

I've thought about this for a while, and I have two full sheets of 7/8" thick particle board from pallets that I could use, and I also have one sheet left of the 3/4" OSB, but I'm thinking that I just don't want either kind of surface on my benchtop. The existing material is made of 2x10 pieces (it actually is two full inches thick by ten full inches wide) but it's in such bad condition that I don't think any of it is salvageable. So, I'll likely be buying some 3/4" ply to make the new benchtops. They'll be a bit lower, but it won't be noticeable.

Oh, and before I forget. Here's the new sign for the garage once I get it finished. I think I'm going to have it printed up at poster size. Gil Elvgren was the absolute master of 1950s pin up art.

Here's a picture of the garage my brother-in-law is building right now:

He's a partial shot of my garage it's about a 2 1/2 car garage:

I'm in the middle of remodeling my house right now so I'm storing quite a bit extra stuff as well as it being a bit cluttered at the moment. We bought the house a few months ago. I'd say the best feature of my garage though is that it has 2 garage doors. The main garage door from the driveway and a single car door that goes to the backyard (you can see it in the pic).

Post a few up yerself in the meantime :D mr 2yous. Whatcha got? (Be good) n Share ;)

Sorry Ish, kids will be kids and I'm one. Gotta play when I can. Leaving shortly though to visit me Mum.
Before I go...I have a question about the height of your work bench area vs. the garage floor. Will you be standing on the floor while tooling at your bench(es)? At different levels? Seems a bit awkward maybe even dangerous? You must have something up your sleeve. I better hold back awhile, and see where you go with this.
(Hmm...the title of this thread has gone off topic now. What to do?)

In the meantime, I found a few tin signs in me photo bin. 2yous might have a few in his :D Lots are out there on the www

Well, I could always start another threat called "Natasha's Lair"....

The raised platform is six feet deep from front edge to the wall. The bench only takes up twenty-two inches of that, leaving a bit more than four feet from the workbench to the edge of the raised platform, which is, by the way, ten inches off the floor. So I really don't have much worry about stepping off backwards.

I got all the blue part off yesterday and today (I don't have classes on Mondays) and since it's been raining all day, I can't go get any plywood, I have had little to do out in the Lair so it's been a fairly lazy day today. Watched a little baseball, napped, and read a book.

As soon as it stops raining, I'm headed out to find some 3/4" or thicker (if I can find it) plywood, and I'll be building bench all week. When I'm not at work, that is.

Life sure seems to get in the way of my recreational time.
