Are scooters way more popular now for college kids?

So I just got home from visiting my alma mater for the first time in several years and I was amazed at the sheer number of scooters everywhere I looked - there were so many scooters I thought I was in Taiwan I'm not sure if this is a recent phenomenon or if I just notice them now more since now I have a scooter too? I don't remember scooters being anywhere near this popular on campus when I was a student many moons ago.
