Tire blow out

Post by dkazzed »

I was cruising along at 70km/h on my Vino 125 on what was a perfect commute with no traffic, when all of a sudden I hear a POP! The rear end of my bike started squirming around but I was able to keep it under control to a stop. There was a 1 inch hole in the tire and though it is possible I ran over some debris, I think my tires were just beyond worn out and self destructed. The tires were well past the wear bar but I visually inspected it every few days. Learned my lesson for next time. Got it towed with my CAA membership and getting new Michelin S1 tires for it now front and rear. Both tires were original to the scooter.

It was definitely hairy at speed but at no point did I panic.

My day was fine otherwise, an hour late for work but I managed to meet today's project deadline. It was quite an adventure. I felt more sorry for these people:

The road was wide open when I was going down that hill and I was doing 80 km/h+, and then as soon as I knew it, traffic was backed up to the top of the hill. Sorry guys.

Well the new James Bond movie just came out - so are you sure you didn't see a DB5 running around you? :D Glad to hear you came out unscathed.

So a puncture rather than a blowout?

To me, a puncture is small, causes a slow and gradual loss of air, and may be repairable. A blowout is something that causes a rapid and complete loss of air, whether the tire remains on the wheel or not.

Thanks all. Man not down! Can't wait to ride my scoot again with the new Michelin tires, I'm quite excited. I should get it back next Thursday or Friday which is expected to be sunny.

Got my scooter back. I missed it dearly. Tire looks old with the road salt as it was -6C or 21F when I rode it home.
