How-to: Install a top box PCX 2015

Post by pcxpower »

I have installed a SHAD topbox rack in my 2015 Honda PCX125 and I have taken some pictures. It’s really easy, and much faster than doing the same in the old model, and this “how to” would not be necessary, but in case that someone was wondering about the process, here we go!

This is how SHAD calls this rack:
20140904_111217.jpg
20140904_111217.jpg (83.22 KiB) Viewed 12173 times
And some pics of the rack itself:

20140904_092503.jpg
20140904_092503.jpg (134.85 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
This is how our scooter comes from the factory:

You have to press in these trim clips with something pointy. I use a small allen wrench

20140904_094648.jpg (60.77 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
And then you take out both trim clips

You take the “lid grab rail cover” and move it towards the front of the scooter:
20140904_095019.jpg
20140904_095019.jpg (66.67 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
A little more, and then you can release it:
20140904_095033.jpg

This is how it looks when it’s removed:
20140904_094741.jpg
20140904_094741.jpg (70.05 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
And some pictures of the “lid grab rail cover”:
20140904_094803.jpg
20140904_094803.jpg (90.96 KiB) Viewed 12174 times

20140904_094831.jpg
20140904_094831.jpg (65.84 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
In this step you can choose to drill the “lid grab rail cover” and install it in the scooter or not:

• If you drill it, it will look great, but when you sell the scooter and you remove the trunk, you have to let the rack installed, or the exposed holes will look a little weird
• If you do not drill it, you would simply store it, to reinstall it when you sell the scooter, and it will look “untouched” and the new owner would choose to install a trunk or not.

I have decided NOT to drill it, so it will look like that:
20140904_095058.jpg
20140904_095058.jpg (74.52 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
Here it is the bag with the bolts and washers:

20140904_095154_1.jpg
20140904_095154_1.jpg (173.17 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
You position the bolts and washers, and begin screwing them, little by little:
20140904_095314.jpg

And it will look like that:
20140904_095444.jpg
20140904_095444.jpg (76.02 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
The SHAD plastic plate will look like that:

20140904_100238.jpg
20140904_100238.jpg (67.39 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
And you can install the plastic covers:
20140904_100605.jpg
20140904_100605.jpg (96.05 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
20140904_100712.jpg
20140904_100712.jpg (88.95 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
And the trunk is installed!
20140904_100933.jpg
20140904_100933.jpg (92.93 KiB) Viewed 12173 times
This is how it looks without the “grab rail cover”. It does not look bad at all, and you can always think twice and drill the plastic piece and install it, if you change your mind.
20140904_101315.jpg
20140904_101315.jpg (85.5 KiB) Viewed 12173 times
This is the template that SHAD includes, in case that you would like to drill the grab rail cover, and the instructions:
20140904_093054.jpg
20140904_093054.jpg (72.23 KiB) Viewed 12174 times
20140904_093138.jpg
20140904_093138.jpg (129.37 KiB) Viewed 12174 times

And these repeated pics that appear below should not be here, but I cannot delete them... perhaps Maddiedog could delete these repeated pics? ;)

Very interesting. I have never seen a tailbox rack like that one. I like it. I love the fact that Honda addressed the hole drilling problem with the new the new version. I messed up on my first pcx tail rack install, but learned from it. On the latest version I would not have had to drill at all.
Currently own:
Red 2013 Honda PCX150

Givi tall windshield & tailbox - Lots of extra lights
Custom seat from Thailand - Bad Boy Airhorn
Takegawa Lowering Shocks - Michelin City Grip Tires
Headlight assy upgraded to LEDs w/HS5 main bulbs
NCY variator, drive face, and rollers

Yes, it has a nice design, with several hole patterns, and one can always drill new holes, if necessary ;)

It reminds me of the carpenter who said, "I cut it three times and it is still too small." :o But for the PCX we could say, "I drilled it three times and the holes are still too big."

I just saw this thread pcxpower. Excellent tutorial with great close-up photo's! :x Thanks, and I also got to see the Shad rack with a Shad case mounted. Nice. It's a big one. Overall are you happy with Shad's products? I've looked at them many times online and often wonder why folks don't buy them as quickly as they buy Givi. Is it just the name Givi that make them sell more? I guess.

Yes, I'm very happy with this box ;)

My other scooter has a GIVI box, which I have used in several motorcycles and scooter over the years, and I'm sure that the SHAD box will last as much as the GIVI one. Perhaps GIVI sells more because they are Italian (SHAD is Spanish ;) ) and they have been manufacturing boxes longer. I'm sure that with the years, SHAD will sell much more products, as they are really well made and people will see them in more motorbikes, which will help them sell better.

You can read about SHAD here:
http://www.shad.es/en/shad-world/company/historia/c61/

And about this box, the only thing that I've had problems with is the plastic strap that limits the opening of the lid, which was a little fragile, so I installed a bicycle brake cable, which I guess that will last forever :D

And about the box itself, I have relocated it a little more to the rear, to give the passenger a little more space. Here you have some pics:

And this is how it looked before relocating it:

One of the benefits of having multiple holes to choose from, in the SHAD rack, is that you can choose different mounting options for your box. If I remember correctly, GIVI has just one mounting option ;)

Does the "The SHAD plastic plate" come with the rack or the Top Case? Or Is it a separate part that you have to order all together?

Thd "SHAD plastic plate" comes with the Top Case, as it's needed to install it, and gives you the possibilty to remove it from the scooter (using the provided key) and take it home or to the hotel, from instance, if you wish to ;)

The rack should be purchased separately, in order to install the Top Case in the scooter/motorcycle of your choice :D

Hi PCXPower
Is there any chance you could draw a plan of the rack with dimensions as I plan to make one for my PCX150, soon to be purchased.
I have a topbox and mounting plate.
Many Thanks
Regards
