Shuttle won’t stay open

Post by Sandymay »

Help!!!!

This morning after sitting for a few days, I couldn’t get the shuttle to open. It had rained, and although the bike was covered I assumed dampness was the problem. I used 3 in 1 oil, and let it sit, and I was able to get the shuttle open.

But it won’t stay open when I remove to shuttle opener ( top of key) to start the bike.

Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Just use it a couple dozen times and it should work OK. Liquid graphite or spray silicone would work better than three In 1 oil, but it’s ok.

Sorry there is a time limit for editing, but all are given a few minutes to make changes.

Here's a better idea and solution:
Make an effort to Type your posts in the "full editor" reply box (look for the button below the reply box. See it? Click that, then type)
When you're done typing, click the preview button below the reply box to review what you wrote.
You're able to make changes in this mode without being timed out :P
When you approve what you've written, then Click Submit.
Done!

Don't forget this too: If you should find yourself unable to complete your reply, you can always catch up on it and finish it later. How? by pressing the button: Save Draft (also found below the reply box).

So many choices, :D sweet.
Don't get timed out again. Re-learn.
I hate that too, but rules are rules for a reason and we don't always get to know why. No problem.
Please enjoy yourself here, it's our goal.
Happy trails!

Thanks WhiteNoise. I really appreciate this group, as I’m the only rider in my circle of friends and family. Everyone is so patient with my newbie questions.

This group is so helpful and I’ve been reading a lot of the older posts and making good use of the search feature. :)

Sometimes I have the problem with the autocorrect in that it looks OK before I press Submit but changes the words after I press it. Looks like I am going to have to do Drafts before Submitting so that I can out 5hink the autocorrect.

See what I mean!?

Thanks for the suggestions. The shutter seems to be working again. Next question, any way to clean inside where the key goes?

You are probably right to think about cleaning the whole key assembly. I guess you used a drop or two of regular oil and the shutter is now working fine. The issue is that the oil will attract dust and dirt and possibly get gummy over time.

I would be looking for something like electrical contact cleaner to dissolve and flush out the oil, and then replace the oil with a dry film lubricant (I'd go for something Teflon based rather than silicone-based, but I wouldn't be THAT picky).

https://www.amazon.com/WD-40-Specialist ... B00AF0OFVU

but any spray organic solvent (that won't dissolve wire insulation) will be fine to get the oil out. Then use something like:

https://www.amazon.com/WD-40-300052-Spe ... 134&sr=1-5

Not like I'm hawking WD-40 products, but in the US they are ubiquitous. I'm sure there are equivalent products pretty much everywhere - just see what your search turns up.

I'm probably being a fuss-budget here, but you should really think about what you are trying to accomplish (or avoid) as you pick a product type. Good hunting.

Update: I tried the electrical contact cleaner to remove the oil and dirt, waited a while for it to evaporate, and then spayed the Teflon based dry lubricant.

Turned the shutter a few times to work it in, and it went from feeling gritty to being smooth as silk, and is working great.

Thanks again for the great advice.

Yea! That's awesome!

It's always a crapshoot when you offer your opinion or advice. I THINK I know what I'm doing/saying, but one can never be certain of oneself all the time.

Just ask my wife....
