I'm usually averaging around 88mpg. Is this normal?

Post by romnation »

Seems like a lot of you are always pulling 100+. I think the best i've gotten since I've owned the bike for 1500 miles is 92mpg. I don't try to drive for mileage at all though, so i definitely don't drive the most efficient. I live in Chicago, so it's a lot of stop and go. This is pretty much all city driving, but i do go WOT fairly often. Seems like my mpg went down slightly when I did the variator upgrade also. Upgrading to City Grip tires may have also had a slight effect. Does this seem normal or should i look into what might be causing this low mileage? Bike is a 2015 PCX150.

I think your fuel economy represents the kind of riding you do . . .. If you get over 90 MPG doing city riding and giving it hand fulls of throttle on occasion I'd say that was acceptable. When I had my PCX I did most often average over 100 MPG but I did a lot less stop and go riding. :geek:

Sounds OK to me, given your driving style and location. Compare at http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/honda/pcx150

Maybe join - its pretty fun.
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

My worst is 42.3km/L, which translates to 99.5mpg. That was when I had to ride WOT for good few hundreds of km in order to keep up with my biker brothers. Even so, I think I got room to get worse. So your mpg is normal.

Variators do affect fuel consumption, especially if you put lighter weights. Also, bigger tire size is another factor.

Mine has consistently gotten 100 mpg, even with the upgraded variator and weights. However,I don't ride WOT.

My city driving is actually suburbs, where the distance between lights can be greater than a city block.

The more stop-and- go, the lower the gas miles. Jack Rabbit starts also contribute to lower mpg. WOT for short distances will also contribute to quicker wear on parts.

You don't have to ride like grandma, but a PCX is not a sport bike, aka a rice rocket. It Is meant as an economical means of transportation, and it does that quite well.

Also remember that some of us calculate our MPG using the Imperial Gallon (4.55 litres), and others use the USA gallon (3.79 litres)...thus a fair difference

Fuel efficiency drops rapidly as you get near 50mph and above (approx).
I don't ever use WOT but take off quicker than most other vehicles from traffic lights as is usual for bikes. I now ride on towns roads (30mph) and a mix of 40-50mph A roads but often max out at 40-45 for part of the journey to work. My '14 reg PCX still gives 130mpg average on original engine parts such as belt, rollers, all things varitor, clutch and air filter) < will change some parts soon just because of having done 16,000 miles now. Only new parts are rear tyre front brake (and a few oil changes).

Sounds about right for your riding style.

I remember reading Honda's specs for the Innova (the model bridging the Super Cub to the PCX) putting the most fuel efficient speed at 33 mph, and I think the PCX's engine is probably similar (although I haven't seen anything official in print). A big reason why I bought my PCX was for the fuel economy, so I tend to ride with a fuel efficient style and try to shoot for 35 mph as my cruising speed whenever possible and try not to WOT if possible. Of course, for safety reasons it's more important to keep with the flow of traffic, so I'm frequently riding 40-45 mph in my area.

And then there was last weekend's ride in the mountains, where having fun was paramount and fuel economy was thrown out the window .... :D

So Eiron, I see from your profile picture that you carry a barrel when you ride. Must be for the Monkeys (for when you have "more fun than a barrel of monkeys").

Hi rom,

As said above imperial gallon (UK) is 8 pints US gallon is 6pints, divide yours by 3 then multiply by 4 you'll see you're getting over 120mpg (using your 92 figure)

Not really.
US gallon is 8 pints, UK gallon is 9.608 pints
Conversion factor is 1.201 - so 92 miles per US gallon is 110.5 miles per UK gallon

I'm averaging 81 mpg US, but I commute 50 miles to school and back with speeds between 55 and 69. I get 90mpg plus when I take long trips with my buddy on his Grom.

If you are pushing the bike's limit when riding, you definitely can expect to get worse gas mileage. At speeds of between 40 and 45 mph while on an open road, your country gas miles will be optimal. When in town, speeds of 30 to 35 mph will be your optimal city mpg, as long as you don't do wot from each light.

You have to make a choice when you ride as to whether you want a fast bike or an economical bike. It can't be both.
