Just back from the South of France where scooters and bikes are very popular. The X-max was by far and away the most popular 'new' bike. They were everywhere and looked great with the longer wheelbase, even if the colours palette seemed limited. I was surprised to see that even the Gendarmerie were riding them.

Speaking of scooters (how unusual), my wife and myself have just returned from Bali, and in my opinion it's the scooter capital of the world. Honda Scoopy appears the most popular, never saw one PCX. You really have to experience traffic conditions in Denpasar to appreciate how many scooters there are.

JohnL,

Bali?? Really?? I have never been there but I always thought that it was an island with few roads. I guess every country is motorized now.

Remember the old song, "They paved paradise and put in a parking lot"... I guess they did. :-(

I spent most of the time in the mountains around Ubud, almost hired a scooter but my insurance wouldn't cover me due to age and medical history. I have about 350 pictures, none of them featuring scooters, too many beautiful scenic areas. On one occasion we sat at a restaurant and I attempted to count scooters going down a side lane. Gave up after about 5 minutes, I'd counted 340.

I'll attempt to post pics a little later.

Before the Pcx I had a french Peugeot Squab for 10years with zero maintenance into it and the damn thing would not die, all I had to do was put gas and oil and it would run 24/7, wish someone had explained me the basics of maintenance, the little scooter deserved a much better owner than I, hope its new owner is loving it.
I hated that scooter, but now I understand it was an excellent machine and its really problem was....me.

Interesting. I thought one of Japan's biggest competitors were the Chinese. I also thought that Honda had multiple factories in Thailand and Vietnam that produced most of their bikes.

This JustGottaScoot article about the Elite 110 talks about its Chinese origins and says Elites were made in Taiwan until the mid nineties. I had read it before I bought my Elite - since they said the quality was very good it didn't deter my purchase. My PCX was made in Vietnam and it was also top notch quality. It seems the key is to make sure it has Honda's name on the side - and therefore presumably built to Honda's standard of quality regardless of which country the factory might be in: http://www.justgottascoot.com/elite110.htm

Thanks for that global Honda link - I found the following information about their Guangzhou factory where my Elite was made - says it opened in 1992:

i still ride the pcx my son and I belong to an ATV riding club 5 miles from my house we load the ATVS and my pcx into our enclosed trailer my son has a honda 125 and that way we can ride our ATVS in the woods and if i feel like taking a nap or eating lunch we just leave the ATVS and truck and trailer there and ride back on our bikes the xmax is to long to fit in the trailer with the ATVS so i do still need it
