Roller weights an peak power and torque

Post by vamootsman »

Searched around the threads last night looking for the "perfect" accelerating RPM's but couldn't find anything conclusive. I'm testing out "11" gram rollers in My NCY setup and the rpms jump can jump to now 8500 when I whack the throttle. Is that past the peak power and torque of the engine? It's feels just as fast off the line as before, but hard to say if it's any faster or slower as it's too close to measure accurately. If it's past the point of being at a useful RPM I may as well go back to 12.5 where I was before if the economy will be better. 13 grams is the easy default but someone has to experiment so I am for now.

Ran for 50 miles 2up tonight on a cruise with my beautiful better half (300lbs with both of us and most is me) and was cruising 60-63mph on flat road on US 67 between LeClaire IA and Bettendorf at 8000-8200rpm with tad more left on the throttle. Would love to say the roller weights are spot on for that but still not sure of where the power trails off. Not going to test it with the love of my as pilion! I am now running 11 gram rollers. Bike takes off like a rocket but still don’t know if the rpms are too high and the sound is giving me seat of the pants faster feelings.

How about top end speed? Any increase even if minimum?

I was out the other day and hit 73 without hitting the limiter going downhill. I'm sure I've got a little more rolling resistance, but fuel mileage is still good, so can't be that much.

I was paying attention to the RPM's, but of course forgot to write things down, so forgot what they were.

Guess I get to go riding again!

hi mate, about 8200-300rpm is best performance given without adverse negative effects. its like giving yourself a 5 speed transmission over old 4 speed...

I'd concur with that, 13g rollers and a newish belt with the NCY vario on flat ground I'm getting about 72 at that rpm.
The highest rpm I've seen on the KOSO mini tach is 8500 going downhill

I hit 76mph going down a grade on the way back to the shop to see what happened to the rear brake when the new tyres and shock were installed. When I get it back I’ll be able to put some more miles on. I didn’t hit the rev limiter. If the R’s keep hitting 8.5k when I roll it on hard I will switch all the rollers to 12grams and see what happens. It takes off like scalded dog as is so if it slows it down I’ll go back to 11grams.

I'll bet it does (Take off like a scalded Dog) with 11g rollers. But 'peak power and torque' are going to be around 7,000-7,500 rpm's. Problem with too light a roller is sometimes it feels like the 'clutch' is slipping, the engine seemingly racing ahead of the transmission. If I did a lot of 2 up riding or lived in a hilly locale, I'd consider the 11g rollers, but the 13's still accelerate extremely well, the scoot doesn't feel so highly strung, and I think strike an ideal balance. If I was putting sliders in though I'd definately opt for the 11g size. My NCY variator has about 10k on it now, with a new one I'd probably get another couple of MPH. Keep us updated on your roller experiments, tbh I'd skip 12's and go to 13's, it will be easier to feel the difference right away then.

I was running 12.gram rollers that I drilled out and they were great but found a couple were deformed and worn so not sure how long they were bad, and what the detriments were. They were originally putting my WOT acceleration at 7800rpms. I’ll play around a little then update.

Easiest, and often the cheapest, way to get more power and speed is to buy a bigger scooter.

This thread is about maximizing the rpm's to get the most out of the motor as is the way I ride the scooter, utilizing the power that it has to fullest. There's other threads to troll that may be more worthy of your time.

I managed 76mph on a decline and with a little drafting, and didn't hit the rev limiter.

So I took a ride today to see how things were shaking out with all the new stuff. Headed North with the coming out of the South/South West at 11mph, gusting to 20mph.
To speed was 75mph at 8800rpms. WOT couldn't hit the limiter. That's with a tailwind on a decline.
Headed Straight West into the quartering wind and could run at 60/62mph 8400rpm WOT.
Turned around and headed back due East and Could run 67/68mph at 8500rpm WOT.
Headed back home in the wind and bounced between 55/60 pretty much WOT most of the way.
I need to a steeper hill to find the limiter.
Super happy with the performance, and The tires are so much more stable at high speed it's amazing.
I'm still getting around 90+mpg and I'm riding it like I stole it.
Time to check and clean the filter and reexamine the Variator to see if the channel with the adverse wear is affecting the roller.
