New mid-size BMW scooter revealed at EICMA

Post by montliz44 »

I like that expandable underseat storage idea. BMW always thinking. Nice scoot, will not come cheap, though.

Meh, looks like a Forza with a few glue-on parts. Except they're calling a 350 a 400....buyers probably won't notice....

I like this, ingenious use of storage space, unfortunately, it’ll have German pricing of 6000 USD and therefore limited appeal in the US.....

I like the styling, and it looks comfortable. The only thing I don't like right away is the headlight. Though it has two lights they just don't look like they would give out enough light on the sides for night time riding. I would add two 'sport' lights beside the headlights as an option. That would allow those riding on dark roads to see not only in front of them but also the ditch ahead, especially on curves.
Those side lights they do have are not on in any picture so I am thinking that they are turn signals only.

My money would be on an xmax 300, but my wife says we have other priorities and I agree with her. It's easier that way

The 350 engine in that new BMW is likely to be from the Kymco Downtown.
(half the price, looks twice as good)

My wife just looked over the pictures of that new bike and gave me these comments.
1. Look how close the rider's knees are to the dash. That might work for a shorter person, but anyone 6 ft tall or taller will be bumping his knees.
2. The front design reminds her of a Ruckus with some colored panels glued on. A Burgman 400 looks a lot more comfortable, and in fact is quite nice for riding, aside from being bulky in town.
3. That windshield might work around town, but out on the open road it is useless. Even if it is adjustable, there is no side protection. The Burgman 400 comes with a nice windshield, and you can purchase a larger one from Givi if it isn't large enough.
4. If those side lights are not real driving lights then don't take that bike out on a dark road because you won't be able to see the side of the road.

Well, there you have it, from a woman's perspective.
Even at 5 ft tall she could control the Burgman 400, though it is quite bulky in town for a little person. She loved it when we would go out into the Georgia Mountains and she could take it on the many curves. The problem with it is in town riding. It is not easy to control for a short person. Maybe the BMW would work better for that. Still, if you buy a 400cc bike you expect to do more than just ride around town with it.

It was said this BMW scooter will be assemble in China, should be cheaper than expected.
And, Asian Market is its aim. mid-size maybe perfect.

Do you know of some sort of business agreement they have with Kymco?

The 600/650 BMW scooter engines are made by Kymco.
You will not find "manufactured in Germany" on the BMW website to describe the 650 scooters, instead it says "assembled in Germany".... from components manufactured by Kymco and other companies in Taiwan and elsewhere.

It could be, BMW has been exporting production to China:
https://www.motor1.com/news/147314/made ... mw-export/

Motorbike Magazine guessed the same:
https://translate.google.com/translate? ... edit-text=

Kymco did come out with a similar "beak bike" prior to BMW:

As a note, the BMW logo even resembles the PCX:

Just back from holiday and others said scooters are the big thing [basically in any warm climate]. If anybody knew BMW recently released one they kept it to themselves. The established brands are quite well entrenched.

A friend from Thailand said The PCX is the most common scooter for Westerners and richer Thais as its bigger than std 110-125cc that 90% of bikes there are. There's a Honda factory in Southern Thailand, and many fantastic modified PCX in Pattaya (beach playground for Thailand).

The Forza is too large/too expensive to run, and given the roads of no real benefit.

Looking at photos only I'd be inclined to agree.

However I touched, foldled and sat on one at Motorcycle Live on Sunday ... and I've changed my mind. I like it a lot.

I did ask the question as to whether the basis of the scooter was a Kymco Downtown (as mooted by GN2.) Let's just say that while it wasn't confirmed, it wasn't denied either.

If that is the case, I'd tend to veer towards the Kawasaki J300, which is based on the same Kymco but looks better than both the Downtown and the BMW.
