12V SOCKET

Post by Duke82 »

Hi all, a bit embarrassed about this question but here goes.

Can i hard wire a 12v socket to the battery? i have done this on every motorbike i've ever had but i have no idea how the stop start system on the pcx works and wasnt sure if there is a conflict. it will be an always on socket with no LEDs, hasnt drained batteries in the past.

This is just for my heated jacket as it needs a 7amp fuse and the stock pcx socket is only 1 amp

cheers

Of course you can. Just connect your neg and positive to the respective battery terminals. Be sure to install a fuse (holder) on the red + side. All is Ok no interference.

You can buy all these parts from Battery Tender. That's the way I get power for my jacket : The basic Battery Tender permanent hookup to the battery and the removable Battery Tender "cigarette lighter" attachment connected to the permanent hookup. Works great -- the fuse is already in the permanent hookup and the only time you draw power is when you have your jacket plugged in. Plus you now have your battery tender lead right there for charging your battery if you need to. On my PCX I drilled a little hole in the black plastic just above my fuel door for the battery tender lead to exit the battery area.

I set mine up by running the Battery Tender wires through the seat hinge. That way I didn't have to drill any holes in the plastics. The adapter comes with a protective cap, so it is safe when not using it.

Just a thought - will the PCX alternator be able to keep up?

Should do, it's attached to the bike.

That's not necessarily true. If the heated jacket draws more current than the alternator can supply, you'll be draining the battery just to run the vest.

Also, are you guys using those full-size automotive jacks? They're kind of big for a scooter. I'd be tempted to just rewire the accessory to use a Battery Tender plug. The alternators are rated 343 W. 343 ÷ 12 V = 28 A max, or 25 A @ 13.8 V. Subtract the load for the headlights (50 W --> 3.6 A or so) and leave enough to keep the battery charged. Figure you have maybe 10-15 A to play with.

Except when they don't want to play. Ever seen a runaway amp? They have no intention of ever playing. Funny things, those amps. They can be good until someone opens the gate. Then they go to ground, and then you have a heck of a time finding them. :-/
