What did i get for miles per gallon

Post by chappy99 »

Drove 241 km,put 5.86 dollars in tank,and gas is 113.3 dollars a liter.
This is in and out of town, average speed would be 40 to 80 km a hour.
I am in Canada.

241 km ÷ 1.62 = 149 miles

But if your numbers are correct, you only put in 1/20 of a liter to go that far, (5.86 ÷ 113.3) which is impossible unless you were coasting down a really long hill.

Are you sure you didn't put in 5.86 L, rather than dollars? That would make more sense.

Set up an account on fuelly.com, and let it do all your calculations. Way easier than thinking (assuming that you can enter the data in the right boxes...)..
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

Please paste this address into a new tab and add yourself to the map: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1NlP7xk7KMdJReQnm-iDhldFBdpQ&ll=4.995760578398276%2C0&z=2
but please, don't delete anybody, no matter how badly they deserve deleting :)

I'm guessing you mean gas is $1.133 per litre? ($113.3 per litre seems a little on the expensive side!)

If so then that's 4.91 litres used to cover 241km - or 49.11km/litre which is very good.

I typically get about 42km/l with around town riding - and considerably less at wide open throttle.

Looks like I made a small mistake in my calculations too. I believe that the 2015 model onwards introduced some kind of "friction lowering" in the engine to give slightly better economy than the 2014 and earlier versions - if so then it looks like yours is right on the money. I've got the smaller tank on mine (5.9l off memory) and I usually get about 230km between "filled to overflowing" and "last segment flashing"+5km to nearest gas station. Works out around 42km per litre. If I go to work via the motorway (so about 1/3 of my daily travels at WOT) then a tank only lasts about 180km before the last segment starts flashing.

I spend about NZD$80 a month on PCX fuel. Back in my car days the bill was about NZD$320 per month on average. Since I've had the PCX I've saved about NZD$6480 in fuel alone - it's more than paid for the bike which I got for NZD$4500 new. Not sure of the all-up saving; tyres are probably about the same (Total NZD$500 to do 35,000km in car - guesstimate NZD$550 for 3.5 rears and 2 fronts to do same distance). Bike rego is HEAPS more than a car here - but still come out well ahead. Also, bike is a zillion times more fun - I used to really enjoy driving but these days I find driving pretty boring - far rather be on the PCX.

$5.86 @ $113.3 per litre = 5.172 litres of fuel

5.172 litres = 1.366 USA gallons or 1.138 UK gallons

241 KMS = 149.75 miles

149.75 / 1.366 = 109.6 MPG (USA)
149.75 / 1.138 = 131.6 MPG (UK)

So you are getting very good mileage, my best has been 113 MPG UK or 94 MPG USA

Also note your gas is much cheaper than mine...Vancouver has the highest prices of any of the provinces.

Regular fuel is about 1.35 per litre but I use Chevon extra super (96 octane) which is about $1.57 per litre

What?? 113.3 What? I'm confused. You pay $113.3 per liter? What is $113.3... is that like $113.30??
I would have a very hard time trying to figure out my gas mileage up there. I can't even keep up with your Canadian vs U.S. dollars., so decimal points would be a real problem for me. Wait...I was an engineer. This should be easy. (I will have to scratch my head and rethink this. So...113.3 what??)

$1.133 = 1 dollar and 13.3 cents per litre...which would equal approx $0.90 USA (90 cents USA)

1 USA gallon = 3.79 litres ...thus at that price, one US gallon would cost approx $3.41 USA or $4.29 CND

That says cents per liter. No wonder I was confused. Is it supposed to make everyone feel better when they show fuel in cents per liter instead of dollars per gallon?? I could not imagine anyone getting away with that in the United States. Imagine buying gas by the quart. There are people down here who can't give me proper change for a $10 bill after I buy hamburger for $1. Imagine them trying to figure out their Gas!

Q. "If I have 7 pocket calculators and I take away 3 pocket calculators, how many pocket calculators to I have left"?

A. "i dont no mis - me battrys R flat"!

I was brought up on miles per gallon too, but these days I find it gets confusing when there are different definitions of "gallon".

Personally, I've just settles on kilometers per litre. Speaking of which, just filled up - 41.67km/L. I'm going to see how good I can get the economy on this tank though - riding like a nana - minimal brakes - no "high speed" runs - no "full noise" accelerations. Should be interesting.

144miles/230km for 4.54 litres = 1 imperial mpg.
Winter it drops to about 133. Hot summer days it's over 150. I live in the UK hot summers are rare

We used Imperial in Canada but because we live next door to the USA, there was always confusion concerning UK or US gallons/quarts/pints/ounces.

If you ask a Canadian how many fluid ounces in a Imperial (UK) pint/quart/gallon, they would likely say 16 ounces in a pint, 32 in a quart and 128 in a gallon ...and they would be dead-wrong, as that's a USA pint/quart/gallon.

If you ask a Brit how many fluid ounces in a Imperial (UK) pint/quart/gallon, they would say 20 ounces in a pint, 40 in a quart and 160 in a gallon....and they would be dead right

So in Canada we lived with a bastardized mixture between UK & US measurements and English too, as I was taught to spell the British way, but we were so influenced by the USA that we use both standards.

Metric is metric no matter what side of the world you live
