How do I patch a punctured rear tire? Is it safe?

Post by Vince »

How do I patch a punctured tire? The rear tire on my 2013 Honda PCX150 has a nail in it.

The local dealership doesn't repair flat tires, because the manufacturer says that it's dangerous. They only replace tires.

However, Youtube tells me that I can buy a tire repair kit at Walmart for under $10.

Is my tire radial or tubeless? (I want to make sure I get the correct repair kit.)

Am I safe just patching the tire instead of replacing it?

I might put 50-100 miles on my scooter at 40-50 mph with about 15-20 stops in between for work. In other words, 5-7 miles in between each stop. The scooter has 19000 miles.

Thanks.

YouTube can show you a lot of things, but that doesn't mean it has merit. On my car, I would patch a tire all day long (and have) but that's because it's got four wheels. On a bike, I'd replace the tire, a spontaneous blowout on a bike can get you killed.

I plugged a sport bike tire once, road it until I could replace it. Takes a couple minutes and worked great! Hardly think it would blow out just for a plug and I put 100 miles on the plugged tire. I haven't noticed any radial motorbike tires. I used the same kit as in this video

Thanks. I will plug it until I replace the tire then.

Do plugs wear down over time?

Should I replace the tire immediately or just wait until the tread wears down?

This is the third punctured rear tire on this bike, and it costs maybe $250 to replace each time.

Don't be riding it to Heaven's Gate. Plug and replace the tire (again, geez) asap. You own a bike, these things happen. Think safety first (but, you know that already....you're asking these questions :D )

WOW! you have to stop taking that road  Plugs are permanent, they only wear down to the surface of the tire and last the life of the tire. I have put them in my truck tires as well. Out of sight out of mind, it's no big thing on a car but maybe you find out where these nails are coming from and re-route the alley's and parking lots you take your bike.

Put your location in your profile please, you might be right in my backyard and I have a new extra rear tire, you never know :D

A tube can be patched. A tyre plugged.

For the sake of balance a blowout may not occur and if it does you may not be killed.

Can can use a self tapper to get you home.

Obviously the suggestion of this will cause spontaneous incontinence amongst the ATGATT,flouro ladies but in the real world of common sense it works fine.

Can a bike tyre be plugged isn't a yes no question.
Depends where the nail is.
If its in the middle section of the tread you're ok.
Sidewall, not advised.
There's plugs and plugs.
Permanent ones require the tyre to be removed and fitted to the inside.
This also allows a visual inspection for internal damage.
Any plug inserted from the outside is an emergency get you home temporary fix.

And I've had plugs that worked pretty well for a while but leaked a little every day and caused me to get tired of dealing with them.

I have one of those plug kits but not had occasion to use it.

The only time i would would use it would be as a get-me-home solution if i was stranded somewhere with a blatant hole in my car tyre.

I would not use it on a bike for safety reasons.

A slow puncture is not a good reason to try a plug kit out as it is cheap enough to buy a tyre and fit it yourself with minimal tools. Even if you can't DIY you could buy a used tyre and get that mounted somewhere which is still infinity preferable to plugging.

As GN2 has alluded to. There are two types of plug. The temporary get you home ones and the permanent ones.

Both are entirely suitable for their intended uses, and it's your choice to use them or not.

Neither will stop the sky falling.
