The other thing about the "Mom Pop" shops was they probably had relatives that you knew around town and it wasn't just shopping at a business. . .it was like helping a community to thrive. :geek:

Amazon, Ebay, Home Depot, Lowes, etc...."They're as Cold as Ice..."
I shall continue to go to Ace (not ice) Hardware. I choose the family "feel."
I truly miss the old days

Working for Mom and Pop is great, no opportunity for advancement and their bratty kid becomes your boss after he drops out of college.

Aside from that downside, the mom & pop stores were great for just coming in and picking up something you want or need, and just talking. It was a bit like a small gathering for news of the day. Now it is nothing but crowds and lines. No one talks to anyone.
I like Amazon and Home Depot, but for unique things and friendly service I love to go to Ace Hardware. They remind me of the days when those who assisted you knew something about what you needed....and you can find someone to help you when you need help.

With today 24 hour news and instant on line technology , product specifications and getting information has never been better. If chit chat is the objective perhaps a local bar would suffice. I know what you mean but those days are over and when you add it all up its probably better today for convenience , cheaper prices and more competitive shopping.Today you can go in one store and come out with food, oil, cosmetics, a pair of pants, some medicine, and screws without moving your car.. even better you don't have to get out of your easy chair if you desire. We all harken back to the good ol days and times but forget about the hardships we endured, hiding under our desks drill for nuclear attack etc etc. I have those memories too but think of how good we really have it today. Another thing we all forget to consider is the population explosion of this planet .Also keep in mind those days were fun because we were young.. Everything is fun when you are young. Its all about "fond memories".. cherish them because time marches on and I believe our lives are so much more enriched with the advancements we all worked so hard at to make our lives better..Time to reap the benefits of all our hard work.

Have to say that I go to Ace as well and there's always someone there who knows about the products. . .or at least enough to get you in the right direction. If they don't have it in stock they go out of their way to order it for you. . .or you can just order online and they call you when it arrives at the store for free pickup. I like that fact they carry Craftsman stuff because I used to get it at Sears but the Ace store is a lot closer for me.

At the end of it all we live in the "Now". Memories are nice to have though. I remember those Air Raid Drills in school and "Duck and Cover" and all that sort of thing too. But what I really remember is that chase scene in the movie "Bullet" with Steve McQueen. Oh yes. . .now that was awesome. . .!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vNvc9n1ikI :D

Sad but true from time to time. . .but if they run the business into the ground then you get a grin later on. Hopefully you've bailed for greener pastures before then. What goes around comes around. ;)

The more things change the more they stay the same. . ..

I like this topic, I have been carrying on an old family tradition that go back to stage coaches
Teamsters by trade and affiliation, when someone ask's me to carry something, I wish I could say no because I'm getting tired. But once you are harnessed you're screwed unless you're a bailer or quitter.
Just the way it is I guess

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I appreciate technology but I'm having a hard time changing my direction when smart phones-Facebook-and texting seems to be the order of the day.

Not just the USA easy. Our shopping centres in Oz have the dirty arm, dirty leg disease.

I often wonder what they will think about their tats in 20 years time.

Hang on to your hats boys and girls, you ain't seen nothing yet. The pace of advancements is accelerating so quickly it will become like the old west. Order, social norms, societies, governments, and us, won't be able to keep up. The results will be upheaval like we've never seen.

I got no answers. I'm both excited and fearful about what's to come.
