Running lights

Post by DanFromVegas »

I was looking for a way to install LEDs in the international non-US turn indicator location. I didn't feel like dismantling the whole scooter to get to it so I tried a different angle. I popped off the trim between the lights and the windshield. I drilled a hole in the top edge the correct size for a 194 socket. Installed an LED and it worked! That's the good news. The bad news is one of the LEDs popped out of the socket as I was installing it! Right now it is sitting in the bottom of the light housing. I put a little glue on a stick and I'm hoping it will stick to the LED and allow me to extract it from the housing. Next time I will glue the LED into the socket before I install it. I took a couple of pics with a spare battery to show you guys how it looks. I hope you like them!

It looks good. I don't know what the law says about blue lights on the front of the bike but I have seen some cars that have lights similar to that color. By the way, you can purchase a 'snake' that has claws on the end of it that you could use to pick up that bulb. It is a spring with the claw in it, so it bends easily enough.

They claim the lights are white. They are that annoying bluish white like a lot of new cars have. Thanks for the tip about the claw!

The upper lights look like they just belong there. Very nice job!
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

Dan, do you know the maximum depth a bulb could be and fit in the housing? Just wondering if you measured. Thanks.

So I'm contemplating putting in switchback bulbs in these lenses. That way they act as DRL and additional turn signals. Hence the question about mounting depth maximums. Thoughts?

What is a switchback bulb?? How would you hook it up to both the wiring for the standard lights AND the wiring for the turn signals?

Switchbacks have a 3rd wire mel, standard lights uses 1st hot wire, 2nd hot wire for turns. Usually though theres a tiny pcb box which switches the color from running whites to amber turns, as soon as the turns are switched off the lights return to whites again.

Thanks for the interjection k2. The three switchbacks I am considering are the 1157, 3157 or 7443. But they are definitely larger inside the housing than the tiny 194 bulb the post originator installed. Hence my curiosity on the depth available at this easier to install location.

Dan, any chance you measured the maximum depth in the holes you created?

I can do one better...The clear plastic lens over the reflector adds another 1/4"

Sorry. I just read this. I didn't measure anything. Just eyeballed the bulbs. They were the 194 LEDs from Pep Boys. They fit just fine. A spherical bulb like an 1157 would require a much larger hole. Since i was drilling down from the top and not the back, that was my main concern. I used a piggyback fuse holder to tap the power. Key on, lights on.

Thanks all. Looks like my best bet is to use the factory location to have enough depth. Appreciate it!

I'm not really a fan of the upper lights, but the lower LED strips...wow! That makes the front look great!
