K&N Air Filter

well after 6k miles i had a quick look at my stock air filter and noticed it was a little grubby, i am not talking time for a replacement but it got me thinking.
so after a short bit of research i decided to go with the K&N pcx air filter.
ordered direct from their .uk site and it arrived next day, was surprised.
fitted it today at work and altho i wasn't expecting a performance improvement (this wasn't the reason i fit one) my bike did seem a little quicker off the mark, and also seemed to struggle less join up the big hill i have to climb each night coming home.

overall so far i am pleased with my investment and it was very easy to instal. just don't drop any screws into the foot well fairings coz they are a real pain to get out

been thinking about one myself.......any issues with it,as the ecu shud correct the mixture? and what sort of money are we talking (uk)?

mine cost me about £55 including postage. and i did a few tests at work, ecu seems to cope fine as i have read previously, it should adjust itself fine. i was concerned the engine management light was gonna come on but not a wink. overall i think a sound investment, they say to clean it every 50k miles, but seriously i have a scooter for 4 years and only did 20k so it's gonna take a while

it is a bit of a spend out at first but if you think about join by my filter it has paid for itself after about15k miles. thats easy enough to do in a scooter lifespan depending on how long you plan on keeping it

nice find, i never bother with amazon coz they ripped me off, only over a few quid but it's the principle of it

like i have said, installing is simple as, just don't drop your screws, i never found mine but luckily they are the same as on some of the honda ride on movers

I'm getting one eventually, not for performance, but for economy. I hate how the stock filter isn't washable.

little update, as i have said i never bought one with the intention of performance upgrade but i am pretty sure it has made the acceleration a bit sharper

same for me not looking for performance mods,as its a commuter,need reliabilty etc...but sure it will breath better
also found one on ebay where they will ship for 22usd making it just short of 60usd about 37gbp which is ok

Hi,

I just fitted a k&n (about two hours ago), haven't ridden with it yet.

I bought it after the original had to be replaced it was so dirty! The roads around where I live are getting covered in mud by farm tractors etc. and this seems to be finding its way into the air filter. The original filter had only done 600 miles since the scooter's 5000 mile service when it was fine. My thinking was that if I was going to have to replace the filter every 500-1000 miles or so during the Winter then It made more sense to get the k&n.

Although the k&n instructions say clean every 50,000 miles it also says clean more frequently if using in dirty/dusty conditions.

Last Sunday I gave the scoot a wash and then found that the engine started to idle so fast that I had to hold the brake on to stop from moving. I took it into the local Honda dealer and they had to reset the ECU after not being able to find any cause. They also found that the air filter was dirty - hence me buying the k&n.

Think I'll check the filter each weekend during the Winter what with the mud and soon salt on the roads. Looking forward to any performance gain though

Well, I can't feel any performance gain. Still glad I've got it though, for the reasons given above.

except i never bought the air filter for performance, i bought it to save me money, so i doubt it's that. as for the next couple of comments, there is nothing to say that it won't improve acceleration a little, i am not talking o-60 in 5 seconds, i mean if you look at the engine as a pump, the faster it gets air in and out the better it will perform (and probably burn more fuel too)

so, i made this thread so that ppl could hear my views on my experiences with the air filter. if you've not put one on your bike and you have nothing further to add to the thread other than taking the piss please don't and even if it was with good intentions i don't care.



as it stands, my bike is still running fine and the filter hasn't caused it to blow up

Over 20000 or so miles, the washable K&N is definitely more economical than buying a new filter regularly.

I need to do the 4000 mile service, so I ordered one for when I do the service. I'll do 0-60 comparisons and quarter-mile tests to see what improvement, if any, are given by adding the filter to shut the lid on this issue once and for all.

Same here

I prefer the convenience of paper filters, plus that the knock-off ones are pretty cheap and good too, if you get a brand-name knock-off (how is that for a contradiction in terms). I just don't want to worry about cleaning and oiling a filter, if replacing it works just fine. Although, if a pod-type filter would work (what with water and dirt flying around), I would rock one just to delete that ugly black box
