Unsprung weight

Post by vamootsman »

Was just thinking about the rear suspension on the Scoot (Which I have upgraded to YSS Shocks). The motor, exhaust, drive-train and Rear wheel are a lot of unsprung weight. How much difference could a substantially lighter exhaust can make? The stock one is like having a cinder block hanging off the side of the bike. Would losing 4-5lbs of weight there make a noticeable improvement? Small amounts make a huge difference on Mountain bikes.

I put on a malossi exhaust that was about 7 pounds lighter than the stock exhaust. I didn’t feel any difference at all dropping the weight. In my opinion, I will always put an aftermarket exhaust for only two reasons: one, it looks better and two, it sounds better. That’s it.

Yep, those generic cans are lighter. None are tuned to your engine - which frequently leads to loss of the low-end grunt Honda designed into your stock exhaust - but hey - the mounts are changed so they can fit everything from a Ducati to a Sear's riding mower.
For most riders: the generic chrome can with an Asian or Italian sticker AND louder equals faster --- in the head.
Plus - you get to spend a few 100's on your scooter! That must be worth something!

Pretty cool to see one more rider admit they do nothing for the scooter performance or ride! Very cool.

Scooters ride like scooters. "."
A better ride is found on a motorcycle.

Um, you might want to go troll the exhaust performance threads and pontificate there. I was specifically addressing suspension improvement, not making my already F.A.F scooter even faster with a lighter exhaust.

Were you running stock suspension?

Running YSS shocks, no difference between the stock exhaust or the Malossi in terms of ride......

OK thanks. i thought it could be a bit of stretch. My bike rides really well anyway with the YSS shocks I have so I'll call it good.
