Gear in South Africa!

Post by dr.simon »

Here in South Africa, the only regulation is the wearing of helmets. All the rest of the gear is optional! Being a Forum moderator on our local SA Forum, we advocate using All The Gear All The Time (ATGATT). What that means, is every time one gets on a scooter or bike, all the gear is worn irrespective of distance to be travelled! The gear we talk about, consists of helmet, jacket, gloves, protective riding pants, and boots.

I would be interested to find out what other riders feel about safety!

IMO the best thing to wear is something comfortable which suits the weather conditions.
But never ever wear an open face lid.

To each his/her own with the gear that's my opinion. Every so often (esp. summer months) I wish I'd have the nerve to ride with some jeans or shorts, t-shirt, sneakers, 3/4 hat and light gloves. Can't find the nerve to do it! I feel that tap on my shoulder and voices enter my head...."Not today, best to wear all the gear!" Who's voice? But I listen. Yeah, I wear it all and all the time. One day, maybe I'll.......
shite, I won't :(

I'm an ATGATT. Full face helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, leather pants. Summer or winter. I have a pair of kevlar jeans but don't really like them because they feel like wearing sandpaper. I'd rather spend my time riding than healing.

GN2's sexy and he knows it. :P

It gets hot enough here that I skimp on gear sometimes. Today, I rode in a full-face helmet, gloves, and riding jacket with heavy pants and boots. It's not uncommon for me to ride in the summer with just jeans (or even occasionally shorts), a t-shirt, tennis shoes, light gloves (if any) and a full-face. I occasionally wear a half-helmet at scooter rallies, it makes talking to people easier. I'd never wear a half-helmet on a long or dangerous ride though.
