Unbranded topbox, what plate to use?

Post by alx123 »

Can somebody point me to the right direction of the kind of plates I should be looking for?

I looked at the net and cannot find infos, or maybe I haven't looked hard enough yet..

Is there a universal plate for most boxes?

Also, what else do I need to buy? A plate and maybe a rack to attached it to my PCX?

I will appreciate any info as I don't have any clue about installing a topbox yet.

Thanks...

That is what I was thinking when I saw the underside of it alx. I have a Givi box and the underside looks like it is the same, although it has been a while since I actually looked at mine.

I bought mine over 4 years ago, but if I am not mistaken, here is where I got it. It may not be far from you because I think you are on the other side of the river, aren't you?

Yes, there is a bracket that fastens to the bike, and the plate fastens to the bracket. If you do not have wiring to connect, it should be quite easy.

I visited the place just today, they don's sell the plates separately anymore. Instead the guy persuaded me to buy a new SHAD box in set.I told him ill think about it.

I'm gonna try to resort to ebay. I don't need the box really, just can't resist the cheap price of the unbranded box.

Bikerbitz seem to have the bracket I need, so ill check ebay for the plates.

Thanks for your help Kram..

Look here to see the mounting kit that I bought in Chiang Mai. http://www.hondapcx.org/viewtopic.php?f ... ivi#p85116

Works fine for $25 USD. You should be able to find it in Bangkok.

Bobs, yeah I found a rack like that in Bangkok for 1000 THB (approx 30 usd) and a givi locking plate for another 1000 THB.

I might be able to visit the shop and have them install it in my bike, or i can do it myself if they wont do it for free..

I'll post some updates and maybe pics once I have it all installed.

Thanks again

Do you have the tools to do it. If not, you are welcome to come by my place and we can have a go at it. I think it is much simpler on the later models (2015/16) than the earlier ones like my 2011 that had to be drilled. I think your model year just needs the back plastic removed and then everything bolts on from there, as long as there isn't any wiring.

If you are interested, PM me.

I'll Pm you once I have all the parts to be installed. I have some basic wrenches, not quite sure what I will specifically need for the job, not until the job is in front of me. I wont be putting lights on the box, so no wiring.

It would be nice to meet a fellow forumer and work with the pcx though.

Update:

I've installed my bracket and plate today.

I bought this $29 plate from Givi

Image

And this $18 rear bracket from Bikerbitz

Image

I attached the bracket to the PCx rear frame using a 13mm closed wrench

Image

And then attached the givi plate to it using an allen key..

Image

All done inside 5 minutes..

Ill post the bike photo later with the box on it..

I couldve chosen the more sturdy plate-like rack for $30 (see photo below) but I prefer to go as simple and light as possible. Besides the box isnt that big.

Update and some lessons learned..

Today, after I attached the unbranded box on the rear rack, I went for a short ride going to my Sunday badminton game.

I was running 70kph (approx 44 mph) on a fairly busy Bangkok road when I suddenly hear a loud thud followed by a long screech sound of sudden braking. It was my unbranded box, fell on the road, and almost hit by a car behind me. I nervously apologize to the driver of the car, and was kicking myself for trying to DIY and go cheap on an unbranded cheap box. The latch isn't perfectly fit for the Givi plates that i bought. Testing it before the ride, it feels sturdy as I tried to pull and detach it from the rack. It was like just only 10 minutes during the ride when it detached itself from the rack.

Kicking myself for almost causing an accident, ASAP I went to the nearest shop and bought a small Givi.

Image

It was fitted fast and sturdy in my bike now.

Image

Not the best Givi model as it is small and simple, but will perfectly serve my needs for now.

Image

Will probably work on adding some reflective stickers and some LED lights for more visibility.
