Living in Michigan, I can see winter temperature drops down to zero or less. For those of you who also live in cold climates, what special care do you give your battery? Do you keep it hooked to a trickle charger during the winter months?

Regards

You should use a battery tender rather than a trickle charger. A tender shuts off when the battery is full, while a trickle charger does not - and will overcharge the battery.

Battery Tender Jr. - Read here Rick: http://www.batterytender.com/Motorcycle/
I've used the same Jr. model over the years on shift and auto bikes. It's a fav among many riders, does the job and it's affordable. Sweet.
Want one? You can buy one @ Walmart in their Auto Dept.
or online. Save $$ ;)

After using a BatteryTender I found it prolongs battery life, but they still die when I feel they shouldn't...from an Engineering standpoint.

Problem is the BatteryTender doesn't remove the sulfur buildup from the plates, and it could keep too high or too low a float charge depending on temperature.

The BatteryMINDer 128CEC1 Battery Charger is designed around airplane battery usage, and therefore much more tightly regulated. They charge with pulsed DC at 3,600Hz, which is a harmonic that pops the sulfur buildup off, and also adjusts the float voltage based on temperature. The only other charger that used to do that was the BatteryGenius, but they removed that ability as a cost-savings measure. The BatteryMinder was able to bring back 3 batteries the BatteryTender let fail, so it paid for itself considering the other batteries on it that shouldn't go bad (it does up to six car batteries at once, after that the pulsed DC gets filtered too much and doesn't have the needed strength to desulfate the batteries).
