Clever! I like the wide trike tires.

Have you been riding it about already? How does it corner?

Excellent, sounds good

There are a lot of 3-wheel mopeds around here
and sometimes it's scary watching them take the corners.

Well it actually is very smooth. I put the middle wheel on a 1x6 when I adjusted it so that when i took it off the pressure is more evenly distributed on all 3 rear wheels.

I am guessing that the braking is the same as it is with the two wheeled version. I have seen other trike kits that bolted on and left the center wheel there as well. However, this is the best one I have seen for a small scooter. The Chinese ones are horrible. My wife would love to ride yours. It is not only stable, but with that center wheel still attached you don't have the added worry of a chain, which many of the Chinese ones use. They can be a pain. Nice job. I hope you find a rear bumper that lives up to the rest of this beautiful little 'shopping Cart'. :-)

Looks an impressive bit of work. Just one thing it's not a trike is it? It's a bike with rear stabilisers.

mel46 , I understand fully about the chinese bikes and kits, i keep calling it a kit but it is far from out of the box and have been making lots of adjustments to the welds as i go , like i said work in progress. The rear wheel dpes help i am sure. but i also really think those large tires help lots in the stability.

you you , technically it has 4 wheels and they all bear weight. I got my inspiration from the old goldwings and even from like towpac "trike" kits. many of them just hide the rear wheel in a enclosed box but it is still there. so in the same way I refer to it as trike. Here in California it does not require a motorcycle endorsement as the wheels are "permanently" connected to the bike.

No motorcycle endorsement? Really?? What is it if it isn't a motorcycle? Maybe there is another classification there. I know that there has been a bit of a conflict throughout the various States when classifying the new Slingshot, but trikes here are still classified as a motorcycle here.

well here a can am or mp3 or even the bolt on trikes or in same class , if it has more than 2 wheels if only a class c needed. in fact you cant use a can am or mp3 to take a motorcycle test.

I know that I am a little late on this thread but sfscoot, would you mind pm'ing me info on what you had to do to trike it and costs? My wife is hesitant to get back on her pcx now but says she would if it were triked. I may consider it.

It's not a Trike, it has trainer wheels either side of the original wheel.

If it keeps her from falling over, it's a trike to her. It is interesting that when I purchased my bike originally she did not want to ride as a passenger. She wanted her own bike but had not ridden any motorcycle or scooter in over 25 years. She had to learn all over again. Then she got to the point where I could not tell her anything. Then came the fall, and now she has finally gotten a good dose of appreciation and respect for the bike but is too afraid to get back on. But she still makes excuses for NOT following my recommendations. She also says that if she can't ride any more, neither can i. I have been riding since I was 17. I am now 70. I think I have a bit more experience than she gives me credit for. So I will ride till I can't. So how can I NOT piss her off? Women! Geez. Well, when the weather straightens itself out, I am going for a ride. :-)

OK, I'm just not sure how the dynamics of riding with trainer wheels compares to an actual 3 wheel design when it comes to cornering, etc.
Have you ever considered a sidecar? It is something you can both go out and enjoy together or apart with a reasonable safety level.

A great talent for sure.. Just wondering how the additional weight will affect the speed of the little 150 engine. I suspect the rigidity of the bolt on wheels will make the ride very stiff and rough on the back (jarring) and turning seems like it would be jerky and slow to maneuver. I certainly commend you on your ability to produce and design this but have questions on functionality.

Whitenoise: they're detachable because they're trainer wheels. :?

Mel, I think you need to talk to a specialist dealer about trikes & trainer wheels before getting your wife's hopes up.
My understanding of a trike is that you steer by leaning your body weight into the corner since the bike won't lean with you.
So riding a trike with 2 wheels at the back is not the same as riding a motorcycle, and does it address your wife's concerns?
Does she want a trike because it feels safer when going slow, not needing to put her feet down? Or she thinks it's more stable?
Since you can get a trike up on two wheels, they can still tip over or highside and cause more injury to the rider when they do...

I think the best trikes have 2 wheels at the front like Yamaha Tricity, Piaggio MP3, etc. The latter having a vertical lock for parking.
Mind you there are 2 wheel front trikes like the Can Am Spyder that don't lean either, and you still need to move your body around.
Now that I think of it, the MP3 might even let you ride slow with the vertical lock engaged up to a certain speed. Sounds like a win?
I just think a trike introduces new problems without solving any of the existing ones. But a MP3 is familiar to ride without learning.
I think stick-on trainer wheels are really bad since no-one ever changes the rake angle, trail, etc to suit the different steering dynamic...

Check out Leola Motor Trike ( http://www.leolamotortrike.com ) located near Lancaster PA. They do true trike conversions (no training wheels) for the usual suspects including the Silverwing and Burgman. They also have a two up-front kit for the Honda CTX700. And, they have been doing this for over 20 years.

As I age my Silverwing gets heavier and heavier. I'll probably be visiting them in a year or two.
