Experimental report of a trip through Thailand

Post by FritzPinguin »

The plan is a trip of about 4000 km through Thailand, from Phuket to the North-East and back again. I planned to do this trip for last year, actually. Since the weather was quite bad I had to postpone it and now it will be true!
The PCX is running well, she did about 25,000 km already. For this trip I did some enhancements, which have been discussed earlier. Mainly this is a modified seat, two power plugs to charge the equipment on the way, a Givi Box, a fitting rucksack instead of a tunnel bag, better light, and a enhanced suspension.

Equipment on the trip is:
  • Nokia N8 as navigator
Nokia 808 as phone and camera
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 as Wireless Hotspot, online 24/7, running MyTracks and Glympse, and Internet Radio
Acer EeePC 901 to update postings here and (hopefully) uploading some nice pictures in the evenings
Thanks to glympse.com you will be able to follow me on the way, just visit my website at http://siam.de/pcx and
get the updated link to watch the progress on a live map.

This is quite experimental and I hope it will work out. There may be some glitches, but please bear with me (and my typos).

This thread will be extended, I planned about 3 weeks - so let's go on tour! If someone is interested in the setup, I am willing to share, just give me a shout.

I hope this kind of post is in line with the forum rules, otherwise please let me know.

Actually I am from Germany, but living in Thailand for about 20 years now.

Ok, back to the report. The first day was quite hot, and I had to wear more clothes than you expect at these temperatures. The good point is, I got NO sunburn. As a starter I did a bit more than 300 kilometers, mainly avoiding highways and enjoying the nature around me. Once I was stuck in a bit of traffic, which means we were going about 50 km/h for a while. A great chance to have a conversation with the people on the pickup truck in front of me. "Where do you go?", "Where do you come from?", "Where do you live?" ... all in Thai. It was really fun. Whenever you are going from Surat Thani to North I recommend taking the 4112, great road, little traffic, nice area, really.

A few pictures are enclosed, I hope tomorrow I will remember to turn on MyTracks in addition to Glympse, so I can conserve the track and upload it later.

Bedtime now, for tomorrow I plan at least about 400 kms. Watch about 9 am (GMT+7)) for the new glympse on my website (see 1st post.)

Thanks to the creators of this forum! May it live forever!

P.S.: The pictures are in reverse sequence :(

Today was a trip of about 450 km, mainly on the highway. But anyway, there were some nice places. I have to excuse ... I forgot to extend the glympse for the second time, so the last 45 minutes were not visible. Sorry, my followers. Hope tomorrow works better. In the meantime, enjoy some pictures.

Good morning, fellows! Had a few beers and a sgood sleep after yesterday's trip. Now for breakfast and then the journey resumes. Today I will try to avoid the Bangkok traffic nightmare and find a legal way around the south of the city. Motorbikes are not allowed on the tollway, I hope to get a ferry across the river Chao Praya...

Not really flying, I still had good contact with the road thanks to my Pirellis. The day started well with a small but well-paved road through the salt fields near Cha-Am, passing some small fishing harbours. Then came a boring part on the highway, followed by Bangkok City Traffic. As I mentioned already, the bridge was a no-no for me, but I found the ferry across the Chao Praya River. The rest wasalmost peanuts and so I arrived safely before sunset in Pattaya, which some people here call Sin-City. For me it will be a day of rest, although my back feels better than expected.
Don't expect too much of a report for tomorrow, but the trip is not over yet. :)
My trusty Red Rat will enjoy a quiet day, too. For sure I will check oil and cooling fluid after three days of heavy work.

While I am still not entirely happy with my tools for the documentation of the trip, here are (almost) two days worth of recording with MyTracks. If you download these files, please unzip them. You can display the gpx in Google Earth, it should show the quite exact route I have taken. It includes all the U-Turns to take pictures and some errors in the traffic of Bangkok. Let me know what you think about it.

Bot days are missing a bit, especially the Day 3, which took me all way down to Pattaya... Have fun exploring the route! :D
