Jodrell Bank

Post by siplumb »

Took a bit of a ride around Cheshire (NW UK) tonight and stopped off at the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank for a few sunset pics. Thought I'd share a few here.. A couple more on my blog wp.me/p1mkWM-gk

Wow! Is there any concerns about ambient radiation from the dishes at that distance? Those are huge!

The only time I've been that near a dish that size was on a military base, and they cleared much farther than the range you were in when it was on. The one I saw might have been bigger though...

Im not technical but I think they are passive dishes to collect radio waves and reflect them to the pointy needle! Its not like a microwave/radar dish that is actively sending out a beam. You dont want to stand in front of say a plane weather radar dish in its nose, unless you dont mind being sterilized. Thats why they dont normally turn on the weather radar till near the runway. A ground based military radar would be way more powerful again.

Very neat! Thanks for sharing. They probably can hear a cricket fart on Pluto.
This one is in West Virginia. The area is "electronic emission free". No cell service or other radio signals allowed.

If you've never seen it before, seek out and watch "The Dish" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205873/

Im surprised The Dish made it overseas, just a low budget low brow Oz movie full of local coloquialisms. I enjoyed it though.
