How-to make 2011-2013 PCX gel/cooling seat pad...

Post by ScottDR »

Hi all,

Thought I should share a way of making an 'AirHawk' style seat pad on your own at very minimal cost. I double checked with Givi and the cover listed covers 2011-2013 PCX models only. In order for the cover to fit with the added height of the gel insert you do need to remove the driver's "back rest". No worries about sealing out water, the Givi seat cover is waterproof. So the seat can easily be returned to stock. I installed with the "cooling side" of the cover outward as I'm not a fan of my bum sitting on a sun soaked, black vinyl seat :).

What is needed:

10MM wrench or socket
Scissors
Givi Seat Cover SC 231 (I paid $40CAD):

Elegant Auto Gel Seat Cushion part# 03611-01. I bought mine on clearance for around 5 dollars in the USA about 5 years ago, not sure where to buy them now:

---------------
The whole process takes about 15 minutes and gives a great relief to the behind on rough roads and/or long rides for driver and passenger.

First, remove the two 10MM bolts that fasten the seat to the PCX:

Then bring the seat to a work surface and remove the two 10mm bolts that fasten the driver backrest to the seat:

Flip it over and it looks like this:

Then unzip the Elegant cover and pull out the gel/honeycomb like structure. Put it on the seat so it covers the seat of the driver and passenger. Then Trim to fit:

Next cut the gel/honeycome to shape in a shape that allows the edges of the seat to be felt by the driver (for proper purchase):

Put the Givi cover on while keeping the gel in place:

Then reinstall seat onto the PCX and enjoy:

Hopefully that will help some people out and I'm sure other padding materials could be used as well.[/b]

Oh, and the reason I did this is because I am planning a 12 hour drive in one day on the PCX very soon.

I have a similar gel pad but I put it into a vinyl sleeve that my wife sewed and then I strapped it on top of the seat. That way, if I get caught in the rain the gel squares won't fill up with water. Plus, if it is really hot outside, I can take the whole pad and put it in the refrigerator or freezer for a short time and have a cool seat. (I can't leave it in the freezer very long or it gets hard.) I bought mine at Walmart. It is great for longer rides. Be careful that yours does not shift around while riding. I would put a strap of some sort around it, just in case. I have one of those ROK straps. It works great.

Thanks Mel. I better pick up those straps. I should not have to worry about water infiltration as the Givi cover is waterproof. Wow, the refrigerator idea is brilliant!

Cheers!

Quick update: I bought the Cheeky Seats padded PCX cover and trimmed down my gel pad to fit. I LOVE the quality of materials and customer service from them. Terrific place to deal with and incredibly great shipping rates to Canada. It's much more stable and doesn't just pull up like the above cover did. Are you able to post the link for the PCX seat cover? Thanks so much, I'm in Ontario also, and will be looking for one.
