The Wave ...Obsolete ??

To wave or not to wave . In and around these parts 90% of the riders are on motorcycles mostly Harleys and 90 % of them will never wave as you go by or pass each other from opposite directions. I am at the point now where waving is a waste of time and considered amateurish amongst those wannabe tough riders on their loud bombastic two wheelers . Its cool not to wave so it seems.. or is it the scooter envy ..hatred or just not cool . I have always had questions about the mentality of Harley riders and it seems to me that many are a classless breed all to their own.

I give em a friendly 'down low'
Just can't be waving around anything that looks like a gang sign.

Maybe only crotch rockets have this kind of camaraderie.

I don't understand the divisiveness among diff kind of motorcycle riders..

Scooter riders are the most friendly though..

Wave on brother!

I still do the wave. . .and yes a lot of Harley riders won't return the wave. I'm not into religion. . .and that whole weekend warrior thing of leaving the white collar job and suiting up like some outlaw rider from the 60's is a hoax IMHO. Most of the "posers" I see around my area only ride when the weather is good. . .not year round. Most of them don't wear helmets. :geek:

Why the obsession with waving and Harleys?

It's such a USA thing. Do you need to be loved? And by Harley "riders".

I'd be pissed off if they even looked in my general direction.

When we go out we always wave, and most other riders return the wave...even Harley riders. The biggest problem group seems to be the scooter riders, but most of those are young and look like they have never ridden before. Giving them the wave causes them to just look perplexed. We ignore the 50cc and under riders. Most of those are drunks who had their license revoked. Here in Georgia you don't need a drivers license to ride a 49cc scooter, and the scooter doesn't need a license plate. Lots of accidents waiting to happen.

Imagine doing that in Asia, where we have thousand of sCooters and mopeds on the road. I'll be waving every millisecond. LOL

Not a thing here where motorcycles are used for eVeryday commute. Maybe only for motorcyle riders groups, 250cc up.

I think it's nice, glad we are not so many we can't have a wave. I always see it as acknowledgement we are fellow crazies. To be out here among all this speed and steel with nothing but our heightened sense of survival maintaining a fight or flight muscle tension which eventually leads to fibromyalgia, heart attack or stroke. Hypertension, dementia, brain fog, death... wait what were we talking about?

Oh yea... just wave, and try to relax

I am a 'return' waver in the US. If they wave at me, I wave back, be don't initiate it.

In IL and WI, where I ride the most, helmets aren't mandatory. Anyone who chooses not to wear a helmet is an idiot, and they don't get a wave from me.

Also, if it's a beautiful summer day and there are lots of riders out, it's too much waving, so I'm a return waver on those days. Just like the guys in Asia who don't wave, in areas where there are lots of bikes, they don't wave. It's an acknowledgment that we're part of an elite group. If it's NOT an elite group, like in So Cal or Asia, there's no point in waving, right?

you you, it's not an obsession with Harley riders. If you were from around here, you'd know. They are stuck up assholes, for the most part. Lots of them, if they see a radiator, and can't see a lot of chrome, they won't even look. Or maybe they can't see well enough, because they've only got sunglasses for eye protection, and their eyes are watering?

We mostly all wave but it depends on how many riders are out. Lots of riders, too much waving. If you go to a bike festival you get an assumed wave.

Phase I - The "Classic Wave". 8)

Phase II - When there is an abundance of riders and it's just not practical to wave anymore please progress to the "Nod with a Grin". :D

Phase III - Way more scooters and motorcycles than cars? No wave or nod required (but nonetheless appreciated). Nothing to prove. You are in a rider rich environment and it's understood you are admitted at birth as a member of the "Live to Ride. . .Ride to Live" generation. ;)

And then there's always the exception. . .for people like me who still can't let go of their MOPEDS (no alcoholic restrictions apply. . .MOPEDS are an equal opportunity ride). :o

Actually, in my state, a person who has had their driver's license revoked is not supposed to be riding even a 50 cc moped. You will go back to the slammer if you get bagged.

I don't think it is fair - how are you supposed to hold a job if you can't get to one? There is precious little decent public transportation in the USA.
