How much to replace a front fender roughly?

Post by GatorGreg »

Hey all, I just had a guy back his car into my 2018 Yamaha SMAX while waiting at an intersection. I know it's not a PCX but what should I expect to pay to have it replaced? See pics below. I have tomorrow off from work so I'm taking it to the Yamaha dealer where I bought it first thing tomorrow morning to get it looked at. In exchange for not immediately notifying his insurance company, the dude gave me $370 cash (not sure why he's carrying around that much cash - LOL) and signed an agreement I wrote up saying he'd pay any additional costs of repair if it wasn't enough. Think that will be enough to cover the cost? I also got his license and insurance info and the cops gave me an incident # so I can get the police report.

I apologize for posting this on a PCX forum but I haven't found a good SMAX forum yet and I figured the cost of this type of damage would be similar to repairing a PCX so this might be useful to you guys as well.

Gator - It's about $30 to $40 just for the outer fender you show damaged plus tax and shipping depending upon where you buy it. There's also an inner fender but I don't think you had any damage on that judging by the pictures. That would be about another $15 to $20 if needed.

Here's a link to Bike Bandit with what you need to know for the fender and associated hardware. . .just 4 screws. But you can probably reuse the OEM screws.

https://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/20 ... sch1085142

Since the 2017 and 2018 models were black I think the fender should already be black. . .but you can call them and ask.

And it's not that it's a new Yamaha. . .it's just that it's something new that arose the demon of destruction. o_O

Fortunately it's not major. . .you could replace it yourself. But do check the forks and steering head just to make sure everything seems OK.

Keep us posted on how it works out. . .. :geek:

(BTW this forum is great. . .no matter what you ride. . .and we previous PCX owners do have valuable insight and knowledge to share that may help others)

Wow, thanks for the quick responses guys - great info! That part is a LOT cheaper than I expected - hopefully it comes in the proper shade of black direct from Yamaha and I won't need to have it painted.

So WTF was the excuse for backing up in an intersection?
On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!

I am not even sure that guy would have an adequate excuse for backing up in an intersection. I have had drivers backup in front of me because they decided to stick their nose out into the intersection, hopefully forcing others to let them continue on when the light changed. Then the other drivers called their bluff and forced them to back up. The problem with that is when there is no place to back up to. In your case, he probably didn't even look to see if anyone was behind him. Anyone want to bet that he has done this a few other times, and now his insurance has threatened to cancel his coverage if he does it again.

So I had it checked out at my Yammie dealer and fortunately there's no mechanical damage. I think the fact that I had just begun to madly push myself backwards at the moment of impact may have helped lessen the blow - LOL. The estimate for the fender replacement is $37.65 for the part (comes painted) plus $96.00 for the labor - ouch.

The guy was so apologetic and kept saying how happy he was that I wasn't hurt that I totally forgot to ask him. At first I assumed he changed his mind about turning right and decided to back up so he could then get in the next lane over to turn left instead. But I asked the cop and he said the guy told him he thought he was too far in the crosswalk while waiting for traffic to go by and when he saw a pedestrian coming from the right he decided to back up to give the pedestrian room. But I was a pretty good distance behind him while waiting so if that's the reason he backed up it seems to me he went way overboard.

I noticed the guy had what looked like limo tint on his rear window so that probably contributed to him not seeing me. When I rode it up to the dealership and back home today I made a point of leaving my high beam on the whole time and to my surprise I didn't get flashed by a single driver - I think they figure since it's a scooter or motorcycle they cut you some slack and let you ride with the high beams on. So I think from now on I'll just leave the high beams on permanently. Also, I discovered that I can easily just rest my thumb on the horn button while my index and middle fingers cover the rear brake lever. This will enable me to immediately hit the horn if I find myself in a similar situation in the future. When I saw the guy's reverse lights go on I thought to myself "surely he's not really gonna back into me" and by the time I realized he really wasn't gonna stop I frantically tried to find the horn and push myself backward but it was too late - I think I hit the horn maybe a fraction of a second before impact.

Good guess but I don't think his nose was poking into the traffic, however I think he was over the crosswalk. Cop said the guy told him he backed up when he saw a pedestrian approaching from the right so he wouldn't block the crosswalk.

Glad you're OK and no aches or pains emerged after the accident. :D

The dealership labor fees are a hard fact of reality these days. . ..

But at least you'll be back on the road in one piece again.

I'm surprised tinted windows are even allowed. . .all these highway safety people are always so concerned about our safety. That's what sunglasses are for. 8)

FWIW I still use hand signals and the turn signals in case someone driving behind me has their head in the clouds. ;)

They have it down as a 0.8 hour job (48 minutes) which works out to $96 @ $120/hour.

Thanks Old Grinner! In Florida we're allowed to have 28% tint on the front windows and 15% on the rear, but it's not uncommon to see folks with "limo tint" (which I believe is 5%) on both front and rear like the guy who hit me did - I don't think the cops in my area vigorously enforce the tint law. Here's a link to tint laws in the USA: https://instamotor.com/blog/window-tint ... -50-states
Interesting how some states don't allow any and one state allows whatever you want.

It’s still a five minute job.

Yes - but it takes another 43 minutes for the technician to pick his nose, take a dump, surf his phone, and talk up the cute parts cashier :D

many US dealers will not do any labor less than 1/2 Hour. Even if it takes only 5 mn, it rounds up to .5 hour on the repair order.
