Beat 2 crotch rockets tonight up to ...

Post by GatorGreg »

... 55 mph :D So I went on a late night run to the grocery store and I'm waiting at a light to make a left when two crotch rockets (complete with neon accent lighting) pull up on my left side in the other left turn lane. I knew the light was getting ready to turn green (I saw the light for cross traffic turn yellow) so I decided that when the light turned green I would have some fun and go WOT and give it the beans (I think that's what the Brits say? :D ). I timed the green light perfect and left the 2 bikes in my dust as I rounded the turn and went into a full tuck and milked every ounce of acceleration I could get :D I could then hear the unmistakable shriek of two inline 4 engines rapidly approaching over my left shoulder but I was already going 55mph (in a 45 zone) before they both screamed by at approx 100 mph so I' m counting it as a "win" :D

As for the shopping I was able to fit 2 gallons of milk (I find they fit best on their side perpendicular to the seat), 2 12" sub sandwiches, 7 bananas, a 4 pack of cottage cheese, and 5 lotto tix under the seat. I was expecting to have to carry a bag in one hand but was pleased to see it all fit under the seat. The lotto drawing is in 10 minutes so my next post will be from Tahiti if I win :D

You were still winning after they passed because there's no way they were getting anything like the fuel economy of a PCX :geek:

I left 3 motorcycles behind in the twisties this afternoon, and got held up by one going home the other way...
When it came to the straights and long sweepers later on, it was a different story...

Best one for me was beating a sportster rider through the traffic with my wife clutching on to a baguette. He seemed really annoyed.

@GatorGreg: This made me laugh so hard....had to bring the thread back...

I think the sportbike guys let you have a generous head-start, probably had a long conversation about how fast to pass you at, went for a coffee, then came back and blew you away. Although you probably could beat several Harleys....LOL

Did you see the 165cc & 175cc cylinder kits? For $1,000 in total upgrades the PCX150 could probably compete with the $6k 300cc Forza, which to me is reasonable.

On the three twisted sisters ride this summer, I had a similar experience with the big bikes.
On the straights, they would leave me behind, but on the twisties, I would catch up and pass.
The PCX is so nimble and easy to push around the corners.
It makes for a fun run!!

When I went for my licence test the instructor warned the guys on motorbikes not to try to match the Honda 110cc Deo's acceleration up to 40 kph. On a short course the scoot will win every time.

It's not hard to be first off from the traffic lights. I consider the race is over once I'm across the intersection, and to celebrate my many wins I usually stand up and wave my arms like a GP rider and bow to any pedestrians . I keep a bottle of fizzy wine under the seat to swig when I do my victory lap round the block. :D :D

Senility can be a wonderful gift. :? :?

Is this serous or spoof? My totally stock 1970 Triumph 650 can't hold a candle to a modern sport bike but will hit 55 so much faster than my PCX - seriously, its a silly comparison. Hey I'm not trying to be confrontational, and I love the PCX but 13hp has its limits regardless of the type of transmission. Hell, I've been on a RD350 Yamaha that was d*mn scary to wind out in 2nd gear.

Compete...?
Err no.
The Forza is bigger and comfier with more storage, handles better at higher speeds and is available with C-ABS.
That's before you even consider performance.

Yeah, I think [hope] they're kidding in the "compete" department. My Magna can do 65 MPH in first gear, and there's no comparison in launch factor. Even the V-twin I have will lunch a scooter without trying. It's "scooter-boy bragging," and it's all pretty entertaining...and really I'd let any of you win just because it's fun to banter back and forth. But really it's not always about the bigger engine, it's usually about enjoying being on a bike and the freedom that comes with it.

I'm going to guess in the 125/150cc scooter realm:
  • + Smaller & lighter is better.
+ Less expensive is better ($4,600 vs. $5,600).
+ Performance is relative to fuel economy.
+ Awesomeness depends on how much it's been modified.
    - Handling...yeah, you got me.
Reading this awesome review here: A stock Forza does 80-90 MPH, in 0-60 ~11 seconds. A stock PCX150 does 67 MPH in [when it gets there], one with a NCY variator reportedly can do 78, so I think a 165cc cylinder kit would get the PCX in that range, a 175cc with tuned ECU and all the goodies (about $1,000) should be well into the Forza performance category. (Not handling, that's another story, but people do hot-rod Groms, guy stopped by my house Sunday with one, quite sweet!)

The big concerns are probably head-shake and longevity, as that's a ton of power for what started as a 125cc machine. Still, cool is cool...

I'm deadly serious, just hung my racing leathers out to dry after wetting myself from my latest victory.

You're looking at requiring a 100% power increase across the whole rev range to get the same power as a Forza.
Liberally sprinkle magic fairy dust on the engine and stable it overnight with your prize unicorn.
Bound to work.

Owning both a PCX and a motorcycle, I still laugh (with you, not at you) about the scooter vs. bike thing. Yes, a Forza has way more power than a PCX, but the launch of a scooter is like a smooth acceleration from a rubber-band, where most of your adrenaline rush is consumed with anticipation of going faster. The Blue She-Devil (V-twin) will simply try to rip you off her if you're not hanging on for dear life. You guys are awesome though, props for that!

The PCX is lighter? LOL

I think it's possible to compete with less horsepower by using a different exhaust, different ECU, different cylinder/piston/head/primary gear, clutch & pulley, variometer & roller change. The HP would be close (because the Forza is EPA crippled for sound and emissions). The Forza is also trying to make maximum MPG, whereas the PCX is now trying to make maximum rear-wheel power.

PCX is lighter but the rider weighs the same.
Taking a rider of 80kg as an example...

Forza 300 201kg + 80kg = 281kg / 25.5hp = 11kg/hp
PCX 126kg + 80kg = 206kg so to have the same power to weight ratio the PCX needs to have 19hp (good luck squeezing 19hp out of a PCX engine and keeping it reliable...)

BUT, top speed is determined not by power to weight ratio alone, aerodynamic drag plays a huge part.
There are no reliable figures for the drag co-efficients of the PCX and Forza but I doubt there's going to be much in it.
So chances are the 25.5hp Forza (with its 26n/m of torque) may still have a higher top speed than a 19hp PCX

One thing which I do know for an absolute fact is that other small scooters which have circa 19-21hp (Peugeot CityStar 200, Vespa 300, Gilera Runner 200 etc) do not have as high a top speed as a Forza 300.
But that's to be expected, after all these big companies don't have access to the magic fairy dusts and unicorns as used by the average amateur shed dweller.
