How would you like taking your dog for a ride?

Post by Cascanciu »

Hey, I'm serious  .

We have a couple of Yorkshire Terriers at home. Both females. One weighs 4 lbs, the other one doubles that. Before we had a couple of American Staffordshire Terriers, male and female (big change, I know  ) but those have, sadly, passed away long ago.

Thing is, I usually transport my dogs in my car, but now that my PCX is my daily urban commuter, I thought about the possibility of taking them for a ride. So I googled "transportar perro en moto" which is Spanish for "transporting a dog on a motorbike", and it came back with some funny stuff.

First off, you can actually order a proper transport bag for dogs. Here's an example:

http://www.bagster.com/es/showroom.php?id=77

But there alternatives, watch:

This thread in the Ducati Monster forum made me laugh. The girl with the backpack and the pomerania was funny enough. I disliked the guy with the boxer "standing" on his bike. Unsafe for both of them.

This kind of "doggy top box", doesn't look that bad, though:

Thing is, the bag looks like the most sensible option to me. However, I'm not sure if I'd eventually get it, and just leave the dog at home if I take the PCX. I wouldn't ever forgive myself if I had an accident and the dog got injured or killed as a result. Dog owners will understand. You get to love them that much.

But, well, I had some fun with those pics. Perhaps you also did ;) .

Hello again! I know that Dave (maddiedog) uses a tunnel bag as a platform for his dog (maddie) to sit on as they ride the PCX together. A plus to doing the same is that you would have an awesome tunnel bag for various other uses. Might be worth looking into. Dave has pictures in the gallery section for your reference.

Those other options look interesting.... To me it doesn't look like that Pomeranian is having very much fun at all. Also, I think the back pack thing is a bad idea just I case you do fall. I would prefer for my dog to tumble separately from me. With the back pack I could see the riders weight killing such a small animal while rolling on the floor.

As for the doggy top box, I don't like the idea of that either. Having your animal being stored in a place that is beyond the rear wheel (outside of the wheelbase of the PCX) would mean quite the bumpy ride for said animal. Also, it would make your animal the very first thing that someone would hit in the horrible case of you being rear-ended. Just doesnt sit right with me.

As for the "proper carrier" I have no idea how that would work out for you, seeing that I have not seen a product like that before. If it were me I would go with the tunnel bag option, but hey. It's your dog and your ride! Just be sure to take some pictures of whatever solution you find!

My pup, Maddie rides with me all the time. She rides tunnel bag:

She's clipped in strong enough to not be able to jump off, but weak enough that I can yank her out in an emergency, or if we go down so she separates from the bike.

Since I'm always riding (and the logistics of getting your picture taken mid-ride are difficult), there aren't any really flattering pictures of her on there. Here's probably the best one:

I've seen a few dogs riding in topcases, like in the last link you posted. They always look like they're having lots of fun. :D Every time I've seen the topcase, it was a standard topcase with a hole in the top on a HUGE cruise bike (like a Honda Goldwing), so the ride was probably smooth. I'd never put a dog in a topcase on a bike as small as the PCX.

Another dog we ride with, Punkin, rides in a bag like the first link you posted. Her owner rides a Piaggio, and he usually brings her on group rides. Here's Punkin and Jeff:

Maddiedog, I was thinking of getting the Givi tunnel bag soon, and I presumed you got her into the bag, not riding on it, but I have to say it looks good. How do you "clip" her and where to?. It would be good to see what "system" you use. I'll probably try to mimic it over here ;) .
