Puncture

Post by Teamtd11 »

Just set off out on a nice bike ride when the back end started to feel loose. Pulled up to a junction and set of and instantly knew I had a big problem.
Turns out a huge screw decided to have a go at my rear tire. Went through the meat of the tire a out the sidewall :-( and it decided to attack the wheel itself.
Not the best of days. I'm currently stranded waiting for rescue so we update how it goes later.

How it goes later will be a new tyre, that one's goosed.
The hole in the tread can be fixed but repairs to the sidewall are a total no-no.

Ordered a new rear tyre from ebay for £55. Fastest postage they had to choose was 48 hour :( hopefully it will be here for Thursday.

Anyway my rescue turned up nice and quickly (My Granddad) and we took the bike back to his garage.

Image
And here she is missing a wheel.
The plan is to just take the wheel and the new tyre somewhere local and get it fitted. And be back on the road again.
I have no other transport so now for my week off I'm stuck to whatever is in walking distance.

i'd check with whoever fits your new tyre that the marks on your wheel won't rub, tear or stop the new tyre sealing to the rim, could be very expensive if it does :(
my old bike use to have magnets in the wheels i think, had it for 4 years and got a screw or nail in every one of them years, i never managed to wear a tyre out coz it always got screwed over (pun intended)

Ah, that sucks. I keep a repair kit with me that has a tire plug kit and CO2 tire inflater, in case I get a flat on the road.

Good thing it didn't blowout, blowouts on scooters are horrifying.

All fixed! So glad to be back on the road again, Even though i have only had my bike for about 7 months now. You end up feeling trapped without it.
I took the new tire and the punctured tire + Wheel to a local garage. Charged me £10 to sort it all out.

So in total its cost me £65 for a really nasty puncture.

Look on the bright side, you didn't end up sliding down the road on your arse watching the scooter tumbling end over end.

£10 to swap a rear tire is really cheap. The shops near here charge $45-$50 a tire, which is insane...

Very very true.

Well this was a back street tire shop. handed him the wheel and tire 10 mins later he just asks for a tenner. If i had took the bike in for them to do everything it would of been more.
If its $45 for the to do it with just handing them the wheel then thats crazy.

I find guys on craigslist with bead breakers, static balancers etc, and I found a good guy who does my wheels for $15 off the bike or $25 on. Fairly reasonable.

I have had my scooter less than a year, and It has just over 6000 miles on it, and I'm on my second rear due to a nail. Front is still original though =]

I've never had the best of luck with tires... my old SV had 3 flats in about 2 years... So now I keep a spare front and rear in my closet for the inevitable. Have you thought of doing the same teamtd11? I would hate to wait around for a delivery or pay extra for expedited shipping. Like you said, you start feeling trapped =]

Then again, It really depends on how many miles you put on your scooter. WIth the amount of miles I ride, These will not stay in my closet for even a year under normal wear.

I have spotted a set Michelin City Grip tires on ebay and was thinking if there are still some on there next time i have the money. I will buy them and get them put on the bike. Then keep the IRC tires as a backup.

Odd, Michelin City Grip scooter tyres are usually praised very highly.
Have you tried them on a PCX?

not on a pcx but on a yam x max 125,their claims in my opinion were rubbish, my ircs perform no different to the city grip ,and i ride all year in all weathers.for me would put ircs back on or pirelli if available
as i say its my opinion/findings :)
