how much do you pay for insurance?

Post by PCX_LosAngelesRider »

I'm just wondering if I'm getting a good rate. Mine seems a bit high (almost as high as the monthly payment on the bike!).

I have Progressive and they charge me $47/mon for a $250 deductible. The insurance I pay on my car is $75 (a 1998 Mazda 626, still runs great!).

They said that because it's a brand new model, plus it's 2011 and I rode it off the lot with 0 miles on it, that the insurance would be a little bit higher.

I dunno... $565 / year seems kinda high. I'm in Los Angeles so that might be another reason why it's high? What do you pay (if you don't mind me asking)

Thanks

I live in Arizona and have Progressive. I am married and 23 with no previous on road riding experience. My rate for my PCX was $479 for the year which came out to ~$40. Have a $250 deductible and full coverage.

As far as my cars go, we have a 2007 Nissan Versa and 1998 Toyota Corolla and pay $447 per 6 months or ~$75 a month with a $500 deductible.

I too would be curious what others are paying.

On another note, we switched from Country Financial on our cars and saved significantly. We had been paying about $200 a month for the same cars for about 3 years and when we switched to Progressive, we immediately cut our bill in half. Then we used their snapshot discount and saved even more. Then bought a house and saved a bit more again.

Mine is AU$210 per annum with $250 excess. Add 6% to get to US$.

thanks for the replies. It's nice to get a comparison. It looks I am paying somewhat significantly more than the average (so far), but I guess it's because Los Angelians in general have a higher rate than the national average.

Also interesting to see the rates on your cars are too. Originally, I wanted to buy a new-ish / slightly used 2007 car, because my 1998 Mazda 626 isn't ball'n with the ladies. But when I went to the dealership and had all the paperwork figured out (the car was advertised for $9,000, but after taxes, fees, interest, the total price was going to be $15,000!!!), I backed out. No way was I going to get stuck paying $300/mon for the next 5 years >:P On top of that, the insurance on it was quoted to be $170/mon! wtf?!

So I bought a scooter instead :)

Good call, scooters are much more economical. ;)

I always buy my cars in cash up-front to not have to pay for the full coverage -- just minimum + theft coverage. That does mean that if the car is caught in a flood or if I damage it, I don't get anything though. But, insurance is all about probability, so I'll play those odds.

As for my PCX, I travel all over on it, so I have full coverage. My yearly rate for full coverage, including $3000 in accessory coverage w/ a $500 deductible is $366.00. I added our Buddy 125 to the policy with minimum coverage for an additional $56 a year. My motorcycle plan is through Progressive.

My car insurance is much, much cheaper. We pay around $250 a year for both my '06 Ranger and my wife's '06 Pilot through USAA. USAA is the bomb, I wish they offered motorcycle insurance instead of just a discount on Progressive.

Sorry, forgot to note, I'm a 23-year old male living in a cushy suburb. I have also never had an at-fault accident, never had a reported accident on 2-wheels, and have no tickets on my record.

I think UK fees are lower as they have high registration fees that includes basic insurance and then MOT fees (pay for a compulsory inspection). We dont have these, so :D

You dont have to have an MOT until the vehicle is 3 years old.

Lol there's never a mot here in Arizona. Unless you're going for some sort of salvage title or something similar.

Not so sure.
I just bought a car that does nearly 50mpg and has 12,500 mile or 12 month service intervals.
The PCX is only significantly cheaper if I do all my own servicing.

And how much did you pay for it? The initial cost is a big thing to factor into the economics of a vehicle.

We are paying $160/year for two riders (both with good driving records), and two scooters (PCX and Burgman). I'm pretty sure we went with the $500 deductible for collision/comprehensive, and that helps keep the cost lower. Not living in the LA area helps too  Been there, and won't be back if I can avoid it.

Very much an old phartmobile, so it suits me perfectly :D

£5488 which is £488 more than two PCXs at current prices, but cheaper than a new Suzuki Burgman 400

Very true, if you take the overall picture adding in depreciation, there may well be very good savings to be made.
Problem I have is that for a good part of the year two wheels isn't a viable commuting solution and public transport doesn't start early or finish late enough for my shifts.
The brutal irony being that I work in public transport...

But I love riding my scooter and wouldn't want to sell it.
I count myself fortunate to have both options available.
