ok, had the city grips installed earlier today, the shop said be careful as new they are slippery and take 100 dry road miles to bed in :S

crikey i got them as the IRCs were slippery thought id be fine from the start on the michelins

:z

also i kept the oem front tire as a spare as seemed in good condition, the rear was worn

No matter what, new tires are really slippery for the first 100 or so miles. They are coated with an anti fungal / bacterial layer to prevent them rotting in storage... Once that coat wears off, they'll be much less slippery. It should be less than 100 miles, but still, don't put her as deep in the corners or you'll end up with your tires in the air again.

Now you've got 2 options: PIRELLI and MICHELIN.
I've got the PIRELLI since June 2011. Perfect! Nothing to do with the IRC.
I've heard many good comments for the MICHELIN. Many friends of mine have already installed them.
Hi

What size of Pirellis did you install?

For winter riders you have black ice which you cant see. In England I fell off bikes 2 or 3 times (at low speed) on black ice. We even get it here in the hills in winter.

You can't see it, but you can predict it.
If it has been raining the day before and the temperature drops below zero overnight, you can expect black ice.
If it has been dry for several days and the temperature drops below zero overnight, you won't get black ice, but it might snow....
