Broken threads

Post by Scottish »

I'm using a ratchet wrench, trying to un-tighten a bolt...the thread seems to be broken resulting in the nut turning but never slackening.

Any tips on how to un-tighten a nut from a bolt with busted threads?

Are you sure you are not turning the whole bolt as well? Can you get access to the bolts head?

Try using a plain ring spanner while pushing down hard on the exposed threaded section with your thumb

If it is stripped try using mole grips on the threaded section?

I can almost guarantee you that it is the bolt spinning. If you can't hold the bolt while spinning the nut, try cutting a groove into the end of the bolt and holding it with a flat screw driver while spinning the nut with a spanner (UK) / wrench (US).

Did you get that hump off?

If your not going to save the hump, you could always just cut into the hump to get to the back of the bolt. ;)
