It's here people! The automatic silencing while driving keeping the iphone display off and texting muted WHILE IN MOTION is already very sneakily on your iphone today. You won't see you have an update because the notification isn't popping yet but check your settings and it's definitely loaded

Go settings

You'll read about a miracle for all bikers.......... WOOT! All phone makers will have to follow now or be sued into oblivion.

Unsuspecting millions are downloading as we speak :D Dam Right!

This is GREAT!

The iPhone screen will also be locked to prevent drivers from using many of their apps while driving.
Users will be able to see Apple Maps, Apple's navigation application, while driving -- though they will be unable to input destinations. Other navigation apps, like Google Maps, will also work, although not quite as easily.

Voluntary action by Apple, mandatory for users. I'm sure a law will follow shortly and even more restrictive software updates in the future concerning other hazardous distractions from cell phones and driving... like maybe talking on it 8)

Yes tomorrow is a safer ride than today for all of us... couldn't be happier! I pity those who have an accident and have disable the defaults claiming to be passengers, food for accident lawyers for sure. If you hate this the option is to not take updates or ever buy a new phone, they got you one way or another in time. THIS IS A BIG BOLD MOVE on Apple's part.

Pretty sure it's use is voluntary by users. The 3 options in my settings for it are:

- Automatically

- When Connected to Car Bluetooth

- Manually (which was the default setting for me).

I'm in two minds about it to be honest. I'd be pretty p*ssed to drive for 5 hours to a meeting in another city only to get an alert sent 4 hours & 50 minutes ago that said "meeting cancelled". Additionally, although we have a law here which says we can't use phones whilst driving, it's often a trivial thing to just pull over while it's ringing.

Whilst on the bike it's pretty much a moot point regardless for me - can't see it having much effect on other drivers though to be honest - especially if the default setting is manual.

My phone/car stereo reads out texts (does anyone still use those?) and notifications. I can respond by voice if I need to.

I don't think this is a big safety issue.

Using your handheld for calls/apps/texting I think is another issue. Especially those that are continuously on social media and the driving is secondary.

Thinking about it some more, I doubt it'll ever be made mandatory because there's no way for the phone to tell the difference between someone who's driving (who shouldn't be using their phone) and their 4 friends in the car (who absolutely guaranteed 1000% will be on their smartphones). And if ALL smartphones were in DND mode whilst vehicles were in motion then the earth would probably tilt on it's axis causing hell to freeze over.

If they can figure out how to make cars and trucks drive themselves on our streets with no human on-board I'm sure they can figure out a way to isolate and limit the driver's ability to use a communication device without effecting any of the passengers in the vehicle. It could be an input code to the ignition that ID's the driver (operator) of the vehicle and sends a signal to their device or sends a signal to their service provider that limits it's use. For example it will play music, but you can't talk on it using your hands (must reside in a hands-free dock) or text. It could be something that starts getting phased in on all new vehicle sales and by law the dealer has to input (or verify that you input) your info into the vehicle computer system to recognize your device and service. After that anyone other than the vehicle owner will have to do the same in order for the vehicle to operate. It will be like logging into Windows before you go ahead and ride the Internet. Think of it as many users (drivers) possible, one PC (vehicle) with one user (driver) at a time, but everyone else in the room is not in the picture (no effect on their devices). And, as an added feature to avoid theft, only those that the owner of the vehicle allows to use the vehicle gets the code (key) and the driver will be prompted to input their service provider info if they choose to use their own phone. Or, something like that. . .. We need to take the ability to cheat out of the loop. Also, in the name of safety and courtesy for other people who are competing for space on the road it's a small inconvenience. And don't forget, there was a time when there was just wall and desk phones. We are not machines and we need to know where to draw the line between "machine like" efficiency and just keeping it real.

Whatever happened to "Chock Full of Nuts" commercials? Time for coffee. Is there coffee in heaven? It would be nice to know just in case. . ..     :geek:

I'm sure that technologically it could be done, but whatever the future may bring, it ain't in iOS 11.

If we're going to use technology to make things safer then personally I'd rather see each and every vehicle fitted with a black box that logged things like location, speed, g-force, following distance etc. Something that could hold idiot motorists to account for gross stupidity even when there aren't police or speed cameras around.

Speaking of self-driving vehicles, I'm not convinced. I think what they've achieved so far is amazing, but what I want to see is how they're going to handle the guy at the roadworks with the stop/go sign, or the couple at the pedestrian crossing who are having a conversation with their backs to the road, or the policeman who instructs you to take a detour at an accident scene.

I don't have a problem with communicating in a car , but I do have a gripe when people have to take their eyes off the road to do it.The solution would be to mandate all cars having a cell phone docking station or requirement that eliminates the handling of any device to communicate. All communication must be done through the car's speakers, and microphone via the stereo or center screen. Texts can be converted to voice . I know that all new Ford trucks are factory standard equipped with start and stop function that automatically stops for obstructions. For example if a car in front stops and you don't the computer sensors will stop it for you. Unfortunately people will be turning that off I'm sure , but positive steps are coming.I like the idea of a car stopping itself , but not driving itself.Thats coming too.Lets face it .. its a fact of life in today's world with social media and business on the go, etc etc communication in a car will not be eliminated. What ways can we make it safely done and utilized by everyone is the challenge ahead. We mandate air bags, safety belts, etc how about some communication equipment that keeps our eyes forward..

If I remember correctly there is an app on the phones that allows the phone to read out your texts to you instead of you having to take your eyes off of the road to read it. Also, my wife uses Talk to Text to speak into the phone and have it translated into text. Her phone is attached to a Magnet that I installed on her dashboard above the radio. I also have a Bluetooth device on her sun visor that makes and receives calls hands-free.

All of this is simple enough, so why do we continually see people driving slow and weaving back and forth because their attention is on the phone instead of the road?!

Made the wife take the update and I think I will put it off until she deals with all the new features first. There are a lot of irritating changes this time. Like a new windows platform this sucks

She said the text blocking when car in motion can be worked around for each notification as they are received for now if you must. So it's not completely mandatory with this version... yet ;)

AEB - Autonomous Emergency Braking. I believe that it'll need to be on any car that want to get a 5 star crash rating very shorting, which can only be a good thing.

I'm with you on this - my daughter got her licence a couple of months ago and I'd be far more relaxed about her driving by herself if the car electronics could act as a guardian angel. She's a great driver, but at her level of experience it wouldn't take too much to catch her out if someone else does something wrong.

Can't speak for all smartphones, but on iOS (Apple) all you need do is say "Siri - read my text". And from there you can dictate a reply etc.

I've upgraded my phone and 2 ipads to iOS 11. For the phone, can't really say I've found it any different. On the iPads the dock makes things a bit different, but I think, slightly better. Still getting to grips with the other enhancements.

Just the top spec x

I think I'm out of this now. My Samsung S7 edge is going on eBay.

£110 for a Leeagoo T5 edge and £10 for a cheap 256gb card.

90% as good with a third of terabyte of storage for a sixth of the price.

As a work phone I mainly use an oukitel k10000 pro. Battery life is perfect.

The new iPhone X does - but the new iPhone 8 starts at USD $699 & the iPhone 8 Plus at USD $799.

In New Zealand dollars the iPhone X is 256GB model is $2099 :(

... but I'll be one of millions frantically hitting refresh at 8:01pm on 27 Oct 17 (NZ time) to get one.

A lot has been mentioned about pricing, but as I see it ...

- The 8 & 8Plus are the "usual" upgrades at the usual prices for those who want to stick with the usual cycle

- The iPhone X is a step-up into new territory; Apple (as do any business) charge what they think people will pay based on what it's worth to them, and of course their development costs aren't insignificant either (especially considering that they won't sell as many of them as they would with a normal upgrade since they're essentially competing against themselves with the new iPhone 8 & 8 Plus).

- Apple phones have a higher 2nd hand value - so apart from an initial outlay, one can usually stay current for about a dollar a day - which I don't think is too bad for a pocket computer.

Many years ago I used to carry a phone - a PDA - a torch - and a digital camera for my day to day work - now of course all of that is rolled into 1 device. That device also contains my entire photo collection for me to show potential customers - I can order products on it - pay bills - communicate with customers, family and friends via text, iMessage, phone, skype, Facebook messenger, and eMail. It tracks my exercise, gives me directions to addresses. I can watch TV on it - or stream other content. It's a calculator, calendar, stopwatch, timer, music player, bank branch, library, time/billing manager, logbook, scanner, weather forecaster, barometer ... and literally a lot more. Worth every cent to me. I tend to look at it from the point of view of not "what it costs" but "what is the value of what it does for me". The value easily exceeds the price by many fold for me - if it doesn't for others then that's fine too because buying is optional :)
