Alvey Fishing Reel Factory Closing

Post by JohnL »

Just announced last week that the Australian manufacturer of Alvey side cast fishing reels is closing. Based in Queensland and run by old friends and clients of mine (and true gentlemen), they have manufactured a large and unique range of fishing reels. The main reason for them closing is their products last forever and don't break down.

They are the only reels that can be dunked in salt water and keep right on working. Made from stainless steel, brass, phenolic resin, with leather washers, they can be taken apart in minutes and serviced easily. They require a little practice to learn how to cast, but anyone who owns one swears by them.

This has been a family business since day one, spanning three generations, and they are all keen fishermen. Their offices a full of pictures of people including celebrities and themselves fishing all around the world.

There has been a huge outpouring of support (probably too late), and it's impossible to buy one of their reels at present, due to people (including me) deciding we need to have one of these unique reels.

It's a sad world when someone makes a product that is so good it puts them out of business. :( :(

American automotive industry as well as many other appliance manufacturers practiced "planned obsolescence" until the Japanese came along with their products ie automobiles. Planned obsolescence is a way to get repeat business by designing products to last just so long. This helps the business to get return customers usually. Obviously your friend did not practice this science. It probably would have helped if he would have utilized a worldwide marketing strategy, and constantly change his product line no matter how good because people like change , and competition is tough today. Takes a lot of investment to compete in the market place. Sad to hear, but seems to be the outcome of many good products.

The DeLorean. . .stainless steel body. A thorn in the side of the auto industry. Just when the quality control issues were being ironed out the company went belly up. We all know about the scandal. Now the tooling is at the bottom of the Irish Sea used as anchors for fishing nets. Go figure! 8)
