Wow, they went down for SOPA? That's silly.

I didn't even consider bringing here down. The laws would affect us, and might result in a takedown if passed, but really, I don't think it is worth punishing the users by taking down the site.

It would put this site at risk, because I can post a link to some copyrighted material right now, and if those laws pass, the whole site could be taken done without due process because of a link. It basically makes hondapcx.org responsible for any copyright infringement that we as members might engage in, or even just linking to said infringement.

Here in Germany, there's a rather fucked up mechanism where lawyers can basically fine you for breaking some sort of law, acting in the so called interest of the party that could be affected by it. The ridiculous thing is that they don't even have to be commissioned by said party, they can act on their own and make you pay for all the 'work' that they did. This mechanism has led to numerous German forums being shut down because the administrator had to defend against all these accusations for stuff that the members did. And we're not talking file-sharing forums or something like that here, just legitimate forums that got sued into oblivion because of some out of date law.

If SOPA or PIPA passes, corporations could basically sue the whole internet to shreds, taking whole sites offline because some member somewhere posted something.

It's not suing as much as it is taking down the site too. If SOPA or PIPA passed, they can randomly shut us down under any presumption that copyright infringement may ever occur here... They don't even have to have proof that the infringement could occur, they could just shut us down if it were possible. Which, since you can attach files or even post a link in plaintext, it is possible.

For example, I would have to police all posts and remove anything that could possibly be copyright. I would have to disable PMs, because who knows, you guys could be sending copyrighted stuff behind my back.

Worst of all, I would be liable for any infringement if it did occur, which is IMMENSELY stupid. People should be liable for the content they post on forums or websites, not the people who run the sites.

Yup. I'll be moving to Sweeden or Norway if more crap like this passes.

First, we passed the Patriot act, which basically lets the government do whatever it wants under the premise of "terrorism." Now this... It's crazy, all the major corporations have the senators and house reps so deep in their pockets that they can control whatever they want. Almost all of this is from major hollywood studios pressuring and bribing reps into locking down the internet. It's insane.

Our senate is at a 11% approval rating last I checked. They don't even care about the people anymore. It's all about making themselves richer. I can't stand it. :x

What makes you think things would be any better in Scandinavia?
Politicians are much the same the world over.

It's far more liberal, but far more sane over there. Our politicians are nutbags. From what I've heard from people who I've played online games with, the politicians over in Scandinavia are much nicer. Plus, the scenery is much prettier. ;)
