But this bike was never on its side with engine running, never starved on oil and the marks on the cylinder and piston are minor. Connecting rod is fine, it spins freely, doesn't get stuck and pin sits nicely inside piston between those to circlips.

Two tensioners I've ever dealt with on pcx both stayed locked in up position but even a very jentle tap on them would unwind them straight away so it's not like they are staying in out position constantly. Mel had it running with no belt, variator, clutch, pretty much no drive attached at all. Still the same noise

Had a look at 2nd hand engines and looks that water can get to magneto from top so guessing rust on it will be a normal scenario.
Bike has 13k miles on the clock and with this noise has done about 50-60miles.
Oil from new always castrol power 10w40 semi synthetic.
Might do screwdriver trick tomorrow
