I clean mine in a paraffin (kerosine) parts washer. It mixes with the oil in the strainer and cleans it nicely.
Then I thoroughly blast it dry with an air line before refitting.
As you say, water and engine parts don't mix.

This was actually explained to me by my Honda main dealer!!
Apparently the law on this sort of thing was changed in the UK a few years ago.
Some dealers won't admit to it though.

Don't forget also that your commute is only 4 miles each way. It takes a couple of miles for the engine to warm up properly and, until it's properly warm, the mpg will be lower.
